  1. Research Areas Experiments , diagnostic development and phenomenological modeling of the fluid dynamics and thermodynamics associated with reciprocating engines: • Spray and liquid film diagnostics and diagnostic development • Shear driven film motion and breakup • Thermodynamic engine modeling (multi-cycle dynamics and control models) • Engine combustion sensing (pressure, vibration) • “Problem solving” – Emissions, noise, fuel systems and flexibility, etc.

  2. Experimental Facilities • Imaging • Spray drop size and velocity • Spray gas phase specie concentration • Liquid film thickness • Laser-based instrument development • Ambient and low pressure steady flow test rigs

  3. Experimental Facilities • General Engine Test Equipment • Spark ignition, diesel engines and advanced combustion designs • 200 Hp/ 6000 rpm electric dyno • 250 Hp/ 6000 rpm eddy current dyno • Six small engine stands (4 to 40 HP) • Custom engine ignition and fuel control systems • Emission analysis for CO, CO2, NOx, • O2, uHC, particulates

  4. Internal Combustion Engine Laboratory • Two dynamometer facilities: • 4 Large engine test bays • 4 Small engine dyno stands • (up to 30 Hp)

  5. Internal Combustion Engine Laboratory • General Engine Test Equipment • Spark ignition and diesel engines • 200 Hp/ 6000 rpm electric dyno • 250 Hp/ 6000 rpm eddy current dyno • Digalog Testmate dyno controller

  6. Internal Combustion Engine Laboratory General Engine Test Equipment • Small engine stands (< 25 HP) • Land & Sea water brake system • 25 Hp/ 4000 rpm dynamometer • 10 Hp/ 4000 rpm dynamometer • 4 Hp/ 25,000 rpm dynamometer • Custom engine control systems • Emissions analyzers for CO, CO2, NOx, • O2, uHC, particulates

  7. Internal Combustion Engine Laboratory General Engine Instrumentation • Gaseous emissions analyzers for CO, CO2, O2, NOx (dry and heated), uHC (dry and heated) • Particulates – Sierra BG3 system with environmental chamber and Mettler Toledo UMX2 microscale • AVL Fuel Balance • Max Machinery Fuel Measurement system • Kistler cylinder and injection line pressure
