  2. STARTER: What punctuation could you use? Where might you use it? PAIRED TASK: Listen to the ‘Sunday Surgery’ broadcast and then you will be given 1 minute to read through it and 2 minutes to annotate together with your partner. ALL: will identify where to use full-stops MOST: can identify where to include commas SOME: can speculate on other pieces of punctuation to shape meaning.

Presenter: Hello welcome to The Surgery on BBC Radio One thanks a lot to Tom Deakin but its now one minute past nine which means we hand the show over to you if you want to call us and get on air and share your problem with us get it off your chest then you can do now is the time to call 03700100100 03700100100 or you can text us on 81199 it doesnt feel like a radio show tonight in fact you shouldnt even think of it like that think of it as like a bit of a hangout where you can call some friends get some big problems off your chest where you can face tomorrows school work or college with a clear mind.

  4. Adding a variety of Punctuation Presenter: Hello, welcome to ‘The Surgery’ on BBC Radio One. Thanks a lot to Tom Deakin but it’s now one minute past nine which means we hand the show over to you. If you want to call us and get on air and share your problem with us, get it off your chest, then you can do: now is the time to call 03700100100...03700100100 – or you can text us on 81199. It doesn’t feel like a radio show tonight; in fact, you shouldn’t even think of it like that. Think of it as like a bit of a hangout where you can call some friends, get some big problems off your chest – where you can face tomorrow’s school, work or college with a clear mind.

Objectives: • ALL: will use some sentence structures with variety, usually spelling common words correctly apart from some errors with some variety of punctuation accurate generally for sentence separation (GRADE D ) • MOST: can use some variety in sentence structures with secure spelling of common words and some variety of punctuation within and between sentences (GRADE C ) • SOME: could use a range of sentence structures with correct spelling of more complex vocabulary and a range of punctuation throughout to shape meaning (GRADE B )

  6. Lulu’s Problem? (PAIRED TASK) • We are going to listen to a live phone-in from the last Sunday Surgery • The resident guest expert, Matt, is going to give three comments to help Lulu with her problem. • The three comments are all at DIFFERENT GCSE GRADES. • Work in pairs to decide which is what grade and explain why.

  7. What grade are these? Why? Lots of people probably go through this issue. The main thing is that you ask your friend whats going on. Its going to be really hard for you because she is your best friend. You dont want to lose her as a friend. It seems like you were good friends before. The most important thing is to find out why she is acting like that. Could it be something you have done? So many people go through this: a friend turning against you. It can be horrible because, you know, other friends are believing what that person is saying and not you. There does have to be a reason for this. Only she can tell you what that is; if she’s not prepared to tell you, you could drive yourself crazy trying to figure it out! This problem is not as uncommon as you think. If you can’t think of a reason why she is acting like this, try to speak to her about it. Without realising, you could have upset her. The main thing is to get the problem sorted out by talking: worrying about it will not help you. It’s not going to help you at school, worrying about all this, is it? A ‘tweet’ has just come in... • Another person has just tweeted in to the studio on the topic of ‘Friends’. • Their tweet reads: @Radio1SundaySurgery : My m8 is gettin more and more into drugs n hangin round wiv bad ppl who aint good 4 him. How can I help him realise this wont be gd 4 him? Chris, 16, frm MnChester GROUP TASK: In your group, write Matt’s (the show’s expert) advice to Chris about his friend.

  9. Group Task: • You are going to work in groups of 4 with every member given a role. These will be: • Mini-whiteboard scribe (Group Leader) • Sentence Scrutiniser • Punctuation Patrol • Spellchecker • What are the job descriptions of these roles?

  11. Can you explain your choices? • I will now ask some group leaders to explain: • How you achieved the task • What choices you made in terms of sentence structure/punctuation • How you reviewed spelling and checked accurately

Peer Check – can you evaluate another group’s answer? • Swap your mini-whiteboards with another group. • Group leaders should read the paragraph to their group • You should then all discuss and refer to the objectives YOU explored earlier. You can use your group role in this task too! • Once you are agreed upon a grade, write the grade and reason on the other side of the mini-whiteboard

  14. What grades were awarded? • Group leaders will now report what grade they awarded and state the reasons for why they evaluated the answer at that grade.

  15. Self-Review - Concluding • Group leaders should read the grade and reasons to their group. • You should then all discuss and refer to the objectives YOU explored earlier. You can use your group role in this task too! • Once you are agreed upon a target to move to the next grade, the group leader should write how to move to the next grade on the ORANGE post-it note and stick it onto your mini-whiteboard.
