  1. Linux MintIntroduction • Linux Mint is a computer operating system based on the Linux distribution Ubuntu. • Linux Mint is intended to be a modern, elegant and comfortable operating system which is both powerful and easy to use. • Linux Mint provides a more complete out of the box experience by including proprietary and patented software.

  2. Linux Mint Advantages • Mint works straight out of the box: everything you need is already there in the distribution, meaning you don't have to spend time installing additional applications (-unless you want to) • It's based on Ubuntu, which means that the majority of sofware available for Ubuntu will also work on Mint • It's community based, which means that any Linux developers out there (-and there are many) can contribute to the codebase. Often, this means fixes are available quicker than distros maintained by companies (-such as Ubuntu and Fedora) - which generally only release updates twice a year

  3. Linux Mint Disadvantages • Harder to use for new users to work • It may be confusing for buyers as there are many different variations of Linux and users may be confused into deciding which one is more suitable for them • It is not as advertised or as popular as other operating systems such as Windows, therefore it may be harder to research and find answers to problems you may be experiencing with it

  4. Linux Mint How to install from CD/DVD • To boot the live DVD, choose the "Compatibility mode" or add the following kernel argument to the boot options: b43.blacklist=yes • Install Linux Mint on the hard drive • If not present already, in Grub, modify the boot options to add: b43.blacklist=yes • Install the b43 firmware on the system

  5. Linux Mint Why you would use Linux Mint13 instead of Windows 7 • It is free • In some cases open source software is better than its proprietary counterpart • uses a single hierarchical directory system • Everything in Linux begins in the root directory which is the “/” and drives will be labeled /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, etc

  6. Linux Mint Recommendations • All About Users • Safe and Reliable • Strength Under the Hood • An Application Powerhouse • A Helping Hand

  7. Linux Mint Conclusion • The Linux Mint distribution keeps getting better and better with its own take on GNOME, the Cinnamon Linux desktop. • The very popular Linux distribution, Mint, has a new version Linux Mint 13, Maya, and a new take on the GNOME 3.x desktop interface: Cinnamon 1.4. The result is, in my opinion, the best Linux desktop for experienced users to date. • Not everyone will agree with me. They'll find Mint's other default desktop MATE to be much more their speed. MATE is a fork of that old Linux desktop favorite, GNOME 2.x. While I haven't looked at the MATE edition of GNOME closely, other Linux reviewers, like Jim Lynch, have and Lynch likes what he's seen of Mint 13 paired with MATE.
