  10. Prediction Do you think a new leader will mean more problems or more solutions? What do you think will happen next between the Mexican government and the Texas colonists? Why?

  11. A Change in Power • In 1832, Santa Anna overthrew the Mexican government and became the new president of Mexico • This excited the Texas colonists as they were led to believe that Santa Anna was in favor of states rights • However, the colonists would soon learn that this was not the case.

  12. Convention of 1832 and 1833 • After the Convention of 1832 SFA took the colonists’ ideas to Mex. City for approval by the Mex. Gov’t • While in Mex. City: • SFA had to wait before he could present the colonists’ ideas to Santa Anna • Back in Texas, colonists held the Convention of 1833 and drafted a consti. for the independent Mex.state of Texas • SFA writes a letter telling colonists to create a new government for the independent Mex. State of Texas.

  13. SFA Arrested • Finally SFA met with Santa Anna and Santa Anna agreed to: • Allow Amer. Immigrants to come to Texas • Fairer taxes on goods from U.S. • Santa Anna rejected the idea of an indepen. state of Texas • The police had intercepted SFA’s letter to the colonists • On his way home to Tex, SFA was arrested by Mexican police • SFA was charged with treason and spent the next year in a Mexican jail
