  1. Solving Word problems Using systems of equations

  2. Steps • Read the problem carefully and find what they are asking. • Define two variables – one for each unknown. • Write two equations using both variables in each equation • Decide on a method to solve the system: • Graphing (when asked) • Substitution (when a variable has a one as a coefficient) • Linear combination (if you are not using above methods) • Write a sentence relating your answer to the context of the problem

  3. Example 1 • Two small pitchers and one large pitcher can hold 8 cups of water.  One large pitcher minus one small pitcher constitutes 2 cups of water.  How many cups of  water can each pitcher hold? • Define the variables • Write 2 equations • Let’s solve • Write your final answer in a sentence.

  4. Example 2 • A test has twenty questions worth 100 points.  The test consists of True/False questions worth 3 points each and multiple choice questions worth 11 points each.  How many multiple choice questions are on the test? • Define variables • Write 2 equations • Now solve the system • Write a sentence for your final answer
