Aims and Requirements • In this chapter, students are required to grasp as follows: • 1.Know some basic knowledge of insurance • 2.Know how to talk about insurance and write business letters regarding to insurance • 3.Master some negotiation strategies.     • 4.Grasp some words, expressions and typical sentences on this topic.

  5. Task 1. Learn some basic knowledge of insurance • Purpose for Insurance • Insurance is also an important term in foreign trade business. During transportation, the goods will be delivered from the seller to the buyer over a long distance and it has to go through the procedure of transit, loading, unloading, storage, etc. Undoubtedly, these goods either for import or export, are subject to damage or loss. So it is customary to insure the goods against risks of collision, leakage, pilferage, fire and storm, etc. What’s more, they must be insured against these risks in accordance with the mode of transport used, the nature, the nature of the goods and the insurance terms stipulated in the contract.

  6. Types of Insurance: 保险的类型 • 1. Free from Particular Average (FPA)平安险;FPA covers the ship being stranded, sunk, burnt or involved in a collision. The insurance company is responsible for total loss or for general average loss, but not for particular average loss. • 2. With Particular Average (WPA)水渍险;WPA, however, covers all risks covered by FPA, plus particular average. • 3. All Risks;一切险;All Risks covers all the risks covered by FPA and WPA and a dozen or so general additional risks. • Besides the basic risks mentioned above, there is another type of risk---additional risk, which can be divided into two risks of general risks and special risks. Generally, general additional risks include theft; pilferage and non-delivery (TPND); fresh water and/or rain damage; Shortage; Intermixture and contamination; Leakage; clash and breakage; taint of odor; sweat and heating; hook damage; breakage of packing, etc.
