  2. DESTINATION GRADUATION • Credits to graduate: 27 Standard, 29 Honors or Advanced diplomas (4 X 4, with 1 cr.fine art, 1 cr.PE, 1cr. computer, and ½ cr. Health, plus electives to equal total number of credits for diploma) • Dual Enrollment: how credits count • Graduation Exam*

  3. Graduation Exam (Requirements passed by State Board of Ed in May, 2008) • Seniors must pass all credits toward graduation and all five parts of the grad exam to receive a diploma from a public school in Alabama. • New: Seniors must take the grad exam each time it’s offered, pass all credits, and the math part, reading part, and one more part of the grad exam to receive a Standard Diploma with Credit Based Endorsement from a public school in Alabama. (acceptance?)

Get ready if you need to retest on parts of the grad exam. • Study at www.usatestprep.com User name is deshler; password is newton89 • Attend remediation. • Study on your own. • Grad exam this summer is the week of July 7-11. Your should have received a mailing about it. Then, Sept., Dec., & March.

  8. CONSIDERATIONS • Work Ethic/Good recommendations • Challenging high school curriculum • Finances • If college is in your plans, make an appointment with the admissions office and tour this summer.

  9. How do I start? • Update your resume. • Know your teachers and counselor. • Take challenging courses. • Do some community service. Volunteer. Have some leadership experience. • Practice: ACT, SAT, Interviews, Writing Essays (Verbal and written communication skills are tops.) • Research for scholarships and career outlooks. • Mark deadlines on your calendar. • Question people whose careers match your interests.

Getting Organized • Set up a filing system. • Make copies/distribute as needed. • Prioritize college list and/or career list. • Note deadlines (mark a calendar or two!) • Have the following sent on time (1) test scores, (2) high school transcript, (3) application, (4) application fee. First and last copies of transcripts are mailed free. All other copies are $2.00 each, payable in the DHS office. • Follow-up.

  11. Avoid Scholarship Fraud!

  12. HOUSING • Apply for housing early. Send a deposit. • Determine the deadline to request a housing refund should plans change.

  13. Applying • Online is preferred. Some colleges offer a small reduction in the application fee if students apply online. • Online applications may offer more space for personal information.

  14. Grants:FAFSA PIN (two) January 1 of senior year Online Do tax paperwork first--as soon as possible--so that information for FAFSA is ready.

  16. Students’ Rights and Responsibilities • Student must notify each college or university which accepts him/her whether he/she is accepting or rejecting the offer of admission by MAY 1.

Schedule of individual appointments • Please select a time for student and at least one parent/guardian, together, to come to DHS for an individual appointment with me. • Appointments will start on June 4. Call the school office to schedule. You may call or send your student by mid-May to select a time. Please allow 30-45 minutes.
