Recommendations <ul><li>Do not throw out the strong U.S. economy baby with the globalization bath water; </li></ul><ul><li>Look for ways to spread the wealth and jobs created in rising high-technology industries (like advanced software and biotechnology) to the rest of the economy; </li></ul><ul><li>Keep training scientists and engineers from around the world in U.S. colleges and universities, but try to induce as many as possible to stay in the United States to build U.S. competitiveness; and </li></ul><ul><li>Keep training workers for rising high-technology industries, so that the latter do not have to deal with shortages of skilled workers. </li></ul>

Knowledge Creation and Diffusion <ul><li>Knowledge is being created in increasingly geographically dispersed locations </li></ul><ul><li>MNCs want to gain access to that knowledge to remain competitive </li></ul><ul><li>Some MNCs diffuse knowledge internationally in order to take advantage of lower costs or to gain access to new markets </li></ul>

China vs. India <ul><li>China has become the place to go for low cost manufacturing of mature technologies </li></ul><ul><li>Indian has become the place to go for low cost services (call centers, business process outsourcing) </li></ul><ul><li>China has not done well in services; India has not done well in manufacturing </li></ul>

Implications for the US <ul><li>The US cannot count on being the source of scientific and technological innovations, especially in mature industries </li></ul><ul><li>US-based MNCs need to able to assemble knowledge-creating teams internationally to compete with European and East Asian MNCs </li></ul><ul><li>US business environment is still well suited to new technology startups </li></ul>
