  1. Balcombe Reserve, Mt Martha.

  2. Environment. • Created in 1987, the Balcombe Reserve contains areas of bushland, wetlands, coastal sand-dunes, as well as areas of indigenous gardens.

  3. In 2001, a 3.5 km system of paths and boardwalks was completed by the Rotarians.

  4. The reserves cover 44 hectares of natural bushland along the creek’s lower reaches. • Balcombe estuary is the last unspoilt waterway entering the eastern side of Port Philip Bay.

  5. The reserve contains numerous species of flora and fauna with early records telling of emus, koalas and kangaroos, as well as a rich fish and plant life.

  6. Movement • Students learn through movement, exploration and discovery of information. • Covering 44 hectares, the Reserve provides plenty of occasion for this. • In addition, there are opportunities for extended outdoor education activities including rafting and canoeing on the gently moving Balcombe Creek.

  7. Community • The Balcombe Estuary Rehabilitation Group (BERG) is a friends’ group formed in 1997 to preserve and restore the bushland of the Balcombe Estuary Reserves. • BERG volunteers, the community, and help from other pre-existing school partnerships work to maintain and promote the reserve through physical action, as well as promoting community awareness, knowledge and involvement.

  8. Sustainability • The three pillars of sustainability are economics, environment and society. • The environment we live in is a product of how we choose to interact with the world and subsequently these three pillars. • Educating students about the environment and the future is a critical element of giving students a holistic education which prepares them for a viable future. • Tomorrow’s environment will be a result of today's actions. • Balcombe Reserves provides numerous opportunities to develop this social sense of responsibility.

  9. SWOT Analysis • STRENGTHS - The reserve is in close walking proximity to the school allowing for frequent outings. It also allows for deep and meaningful involvement of students in their local community and groups and visa versa. • WEAKNESSES - The requirements of supervising students in such a complex environment. • OPPERTUNITIES - There are unlimited opportunities for cross-curricular study and extension units. • THREATS - A thorough risk assessment would need to include students safety around the waterway, as well as detailed briefings on students’ behaviour and self-representation.

  10. Conclusion • Balcome Reserve provides wonderful possibilities for any number of areas of study. • As an area of unique and outstanding natural beauty, the advantages it provides should not be ignored. • Photographs courtesy of Balcombe Estuary Rehabilitation Group; www.berg.org.au
