  1. The Necessity of prayer2 Kings 19:14-19

  2. Three questions to answer: What is the foundation of an effective prayer life? What are some obstacles to an effective prayer life? What are the elements of an effective prayer?

  3. Foundation of prayer • “Hezekiah son of Ahaz began to rule over Judah in the third year of King Hoshea’s reign in Israel.” 2 Kings 18:1 • “He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father David had done. He removed the high places, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles...2 Kings 18:3-4a

  4. Foundation of prayer “Hezekiah trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel... He held fast to the Lord and did not stop following him; he kept the commands the Lord had given Moses. And the Lord was with him; he was successful in whatever he undertook. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him.” 2 Kings 18:5a-7

  5. Foundation of prayer • A life fully devoted to following and obeying God • “... The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” James 5:16b

  6. Obstacles of prayer • “In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah’s reign, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.” 2 Kings 18:13 • The shock of ACTUAL WARFARE

  7. Obstacles of prayer • “Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the Lord when he says, ‘The Lord will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’” 2 Kings 18:30

  8. Obstacles to prayer . . .Choose life and not death! “Do not listen to Hezekiah, for he is misleading you when he says, ‘The Lord will deliver us.’ Has the god of any nation ever delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria?”2 Kings 18:32b-33 PSYCHOLOGICAL, EMOTIONAL, AND SPIRITUAL WARFARE

  9. Keys to hurdling the obstacles • STOP…letting your feelings get the best of you • LOOK…at God and ask him to help you see this from his perspective • LISTEN…to what God may be saying about the situation • PRAY

  10. Elements of effective prayer • When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the Lord. He sent Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary and the leading priests, all wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. 2 Kings 19:1-2

  11. Elements of effective prayer Share need with your spiritual community Share need with a spiritual leader Share need with God

  12. What about you? Are you resolved to be a fully devoted follower of Christ? Are you choosing prayer over your own human responses to crisis? Are you praying biblically and in community?
