  5. WHAT IS UNDERUTILIZATION? Underutilization means having fewer minorities, women or other employees in a protected category that would reasonably be expected by their availability in the labor force in a relevant geographic area. For CUNY the relevant geographic area is NY, NJ, CT and PA.

  6. Biology as an Example According to 2007-08 availability data - 51.3% of all doctorates awarded in biological and biomedical sciences were female. For 2009-10 we had a total of 21 faculty members in Biology, of which 9 or 43% were female. Therefore, we have an underutilization of females in biology.
