  7. You will need a Lone Star student ID to access the electronic resources from home or to place any holds on library books. You can request a student ID online by clicking on “Library Services” from the library web page and then choosing “Students” (This will be a temporary ID. For one with a photo, you will need to come to the 2nd floor circulation desk. Bring your student ID number and a photo ID. You will be able to use the barcode on your temporary ID to access the resources from home.) You can also go directly to the web page to request a card at this address: www.lonestar.edu/library/card.htm You can apply for a library card online here

  8. If you need to find a book or AV item, use the Library Catalog “Combination Search” is more powerful and allows you both to “limit by location” and by “type” (such as DVD or Electronic Books) You can also can do a “keyword search” first and then “limit by location” second. Use the tabs at the top to look at “My Account” and “Requests” you may have placed asking for items to be held for you or transferred to the Tomball location.

  9. When you search the library catalog, you are seeing items from ALL the libraries in the “Harmonic Consortium” Lone Star College Libraries Harris County Public Library System Montgomery County Memorial Public Library System From home or on campus, using your library barcode, you can request that material be sent to Tomball for you to pick up. If you want an item that is NOT in the catalog, use our online form to request it through “Interlibrary Loan” (See “Library Services” | “Students”)

  10. If you need articles, use our online databases. • Databases are collections of electronic material. A database may hold journal articles (scholarly magazines), online reference books, images, newspapers and more. Most of the time, however, you will be searching databases to find online articles in journals. • To do this, it is helpful to understand what a database is. • A database may hold thousands of journal articles. Each article has its own “record.” Certain pieces of information about the article are in this record. Each piece of information for the article has been typed into a “field” for that record: • Title of the article • Author • Name of the journal • Publication information for the journal (month, volume, issue number, pages,) • Date the article was published • Identifying information usually used only by the database (strings of numbers) • Subjects – Words that describe what is in the database • The full text of the article (the article itself)

  11. When you search a database, you search within the “fields” of the record (such as looking in the subject field) you search by “keyword” (you look for the word anywhere it appears in the article) OR So there are two common ways to search databases: By Keyword -- sometimes called a “Basic Search” By Subject -- sometimes called an “Advanced Search” A common strategy is to use keywords to find some articles you like and then do a more targeted search using subject words.

  12. To access our electronic resources, click “Research Databases” from the web page Films on Demand provides streaming video. The other databases are collections of material ranging from journal and newspaper articles to images to reference information and more. They are NOT web sites and will not be found by searching Google. You search these using keyword and advanced search.

  13. Here are some TIPS when using databases: • You do not search them like web pages. You must use the interface that the company has provided. This is different for each database. Use the help feature. • There is usually some type of “Advanced Search” that gives a targeted search. Also look for “full text.” • Try a “subject search” first. If that does not work, try a “keyword search,” find a good article, and then look at those subject headings to re-do your search. • Look for the “print” feature within the database. Do not hit “print” on the Menu bar.
