  2. What do workplace injuries cost? • $696 million in 1999/00. The average cost per injury was $17 596 This was made up of • Back injuries $220million and 29% of all injuries.

  3. That is a lot of money….How many people were involved? • The total number of employment injuries in 1999/00 were 53 224. • Approximately 6000 of those were under 25 Males are more likely to be injured • 72% of all injured were males.

  4. Injuries can mean anything….What were the serious injuries? • 181 people died at work • 15 241 of employment injuries involved a permanent disability. This is 28.6% of all injuries

  5. What do you think was the biggest permanent disability? • Deafness • Loss of Limb • Burns / Scalds

Retailing has one of the highest costs to the community $84 million and is also one of the industries that has a high level of injury instances • Retail has a higher than state average for lost time in the industry • Retail has the highest number of females injured 52.1% of all injuries are female.

  9. How does this all affect me? • Young people get hurt everyday. In 1998/99 nine young people were killed and 1000 were permanently injured. That works out to be 23 every day..
