  1. Gloria Visintini Language Director (Technology Enhanced Learning)

  2. What is a MOOC? • A MOOC is a massive open online course • MOOCs were first developed by top US Universities • Coursera, Udacity and edXare the major MOOC providers • New providers are also emerging like FutureLearn in the UK • Since their establishment more UK Universities have started experimenting with MOOCs • The UoB is one of them. It recently developed two MOOCs

  3. Cultural Studies: • was launched in Feb 2015 for the first time • was re-run in Oct 2015 and Feb 2016 (thanks to Routes into Languages South West) • has attracted over 36,000 learners across the world so far (15,000 in run 1; 11,000 in run 2; 11,000 in run 3)

  4. Asia North America Europe Africa South America Australia

  5. Why did we make Cultural Studies? • toraise awareness of what the study of Modern Languages is today • to experiment with new pedagogies and technologies • to disseminate our work / research • to improve our recruitment figures

  6. Our course design/format • Conveys the idea that Cultural Studies includes a range of studies • Exposes learners to a variety of topics within a single course • Allows them to learn in small bites (and dip in and out of the course) • Creates a structure that is easy to follow • Reflects the type of teaching we do at Bristol, across departments

  7. Some learner feedback (source: post-course evaluation survey) • Around 90% of learners rated their overall experience of the course as being good or excellent. Over 90% of the respondents also said that the course met or exceeded their expectations. • The same results were found across all three surveys.

  8. Some learner feedback (source: post-course evaluation survey) In particular, people: • liked learning through different sources • found the structure of the course very clear • rated course orientation highly • said the educators were very engaging • found the (1) level of the course(2) its length and (3) the amount of time require to complete it about right

  9. A sample of comments posted on the course • “Thanks for letting us travel around the world to learn about our past. Thanks for showing us other ways to approach cultures and learn from slogans, monuments, books and images.” • “I have a very life-long intellectual curiosity about other cultures than the one(s) I have lived in. This course has been very valuable in understanding other cultures. I loved it!” • “Thank you very much! This was a most enjoyable course. It has cemented my choice of studying languages at University.” • “Excellent course! Great content, well organised, with extraordinary tutors. It has opened my eyes to how little I know about other countries' cultures - a humbling experience but a worthwhile one.” • “Thank you Gloria and the team for a very stimulating and thought provoking course. The concept really worked for me, and I sincerely hope you extend the course in the near future - more of the same please. Also many thanks to the dedicated student body taking part. I've learned so much from all your comments.”

  10. The development process: Lasted around 18 months -- from the announcement of funding to the actual launch -- and included three main periods: (1) The definition of the subject/format [July 2013 – Feb 2014] (2) The design, planning and preparation of the content [Feb-June 2014] (3) The production (and marketing) [July 2014 – Feb 2015]

  11. Some major challenges • agreeing on the overall MOOC subject and course format • designing academic content that is accessible • securing permission for third-party images • finding effective marketing channels • getting support from some University teams • organising work within and betweenmultiple teams

  13. What would I have done differently? • Started the image-clearance process much earlier • Designed the course in such a way as to allow us to incorporate it into our programmes • Set research questions (instead of weekly themes) • Experimented with a range of assessments • Created a stronger link with the study of languages

  14. …some food for thought “[…] History, cultural icons, international universal themes, the opportunity to contrast and compare ideas from different national perspectives, all these have been used effectively to make us reconsider prejudices and beliefs, BUT, how did all this link to a language component???” “Gloria and whole team - I can only say again what a superb course this was , superbly constructed, efficiently executed plus the benefit of your erudite team of presenters who were even better in the discussion sessions. If I have one comment it is that I would have liked more on how history shapes people and societies today.”

  15. It has been very rewarding to experience: • The day Cultural Studies went live • How much our learners enjoyed the course • Their high level of engagement with our content • The positive impact the MOOC has had on many people • The collegiality/bond it has created with colleagues • A much more positive attitude towards experimentation and e-learning among colleagues

  16. Thank you
