  2. Open Ended Questions… • How would he like modern day movies? • What is his back ground? •  What influenced him? • What is his Writing style? • What are some of his poems?

  3. Background • Born May 31st 1819, near Huntington Long Island, New York. • He is the second child of eight. • He was mostly self-educated.

  4. Influences • Italian Opera- witch inspired him to write leaves of Grass • Shakespeare • The Bible • Emerson- Who helped Whitman to find himself http://www.wisegorilla.com/images/UK/Shakespeare.jpg http://www.thbc.com/Uploads/bible2.jpg http://digital.lib.lehigh.edu/pfaffs /images/Emerson_Ralph_1.jpg

  5. Writing Style • Whitman incorporated natural speech rhythms into poetry. • He disregarded meter, but the overall effect has a melodic character.

  6. Quotes by Whitman • “I have learned that to be with those I like is enough.” • “I no doubt deserved my enemies, but I don’t believe I deserved my friends.” • “The art of art, the glory of expression and the sunshine of the light of letters, is simplicity.” • “If you done it, it ain’t bragging.” http://www.quotationspage.com/quotes/Walt_Whitman

  7. Poems Once I Pas`s'd Through A Populous City Once I Pas`s'd through a populous city imprinting my brain for future use with its shows, architecture, customs, tradition,Yet now of all that city I remember only a man I casually met there who detained me for love of me,Day by day and night by night we were together — all else has long been forgotten by me,I remember I saw only that man who passionately clung to me,Again we wander, we love, we separate again,Again he holds me by the hand, I must not go,I see him close beside me with silent lips sad and tremulous. http://www.infopt.demon.co.uk/whitman.htm

  8. Modern Day Movies • Because Whitman used natural speech rhythms and his overall effect had a melodic character we believe that Whitman may enjoy a musical like cats or maybe even The Phantom of the Opera. • We also believe that Whitman probably wouldn’t like the modern day Romeo and Juliet because the makers make it too modernized. They should keep the old dialog and not change it.
