  2. Physical Illness and the Health Care System • Health and happiness is what we want most in life. • Medical services in this country are organized into four basic components physical: physicians in private practice, group outpatient settings, hospital settings, and public health services. • The focus of public health services is primarily preventative in nature.

  3. Problems in Health Care • See table 15.1 page 481. • Service Orientation versus Profit Orientation (the average doctor makes $200,000 a year) ( In 1970 the daily hospital cost was $74 and in 2001 it was $900). • Emphasis on treatment rather than on prevention. • See exhibit 15.1 page 482 (health practices and longevity). • Unequal access to health services. • White males have a 6 year longer life expectancy than for African Americans.

  4. Problems in Health Care • The use and availability of medical care are directly related to socioeconomic class and race. • Being poor promotes poor health. • Low quality health care for the elderly. • The old old (over 85) are our fastest growing age group. • AIDS • See exhibit 15.3 – Our Thoughts • People infected HIV / AIDS are covered by the American with Disabilities Act.

  5. Problems in Health Care • Unnecessary or harmful care. • The poor, persons of color, and women are more likely to be victimized by inferior care. • See exhibit 15.4 – A second opinion saved her life. • Controversy over the use of life-sustaining equipment. • The high cost of medical care. • Hospitals are very expensive.

  6. Financing Medical Care • Medicaid (in Arizona it is AHCCCS) • Medicare • Private insurance • State Children’s Health Insurance (SCHIP) Improving the Current System • Holding down costs. • Preventative medicine and managed care. • Additional health – Care proposals – see page 497. • See exhibit 15.6 The British System: A Comparison. • Establishing a National Health Insurance Program in the United States.
