Types of Robots Continued • Humanoid- A robot that resembles a human that is used for entertainment and interaction with humans • Industrial robots – Automatically controlled robot used for manufacturing • Swarm robots – Are many simple robots • Nanorobots- Tiny devices that are used to maintain and protect the human body • .5 to 3 microns

  5. Brief History of Humanoids • 1495 – Leonardo Divinci was said to have made a robot that could sit up and wave his hands. • 1973 – Wabot-1 was created in Tokyo and was able to move and communicate in Japanese. • The majority of robots were created in Japan until about 2009-10 when America built our first full sized humanoid called CHARLI-L. • The most recent humanoid is the PET-PROTO that was created in 2012.

  7. Trusting Robots • In a blog called ‘Why I’m Against Robots’ Mike Hover states 4 reasons he doesn’t trust them. • Afraid they will be smarter than us. • Make us lazy • Human and Robot relations • Robot uprising • Professor of computer science at University of Zurich and director of the AI Lab states, “ There are quite a number of studies that suggest that as long as people can clearly see that the robot is a machine, even if they project their feelings into it, then they feel comfortable.” • Society has given robots a bad image • I Robot

  8. Future of Robots May become a part of our household From CBS article ‘A Humanoid Future’ Mataric, professor and director of CRES, says, “She expects to see humanoid helpmates sold to consumers within five years, and an all-robot soccer team able to defeat a team of humans by 2025.” Rethink Robotics, maker of ‘Baxter’ robot, say it can apply common sense, adapt to its environment and be trained in less than 30 minutes to complete specific tasks, by workers without robotic expertise. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6g0iWuADL8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFGfq0pRczY
