  1. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

  2. The UK is situated on the British Isles. The capital of the country is London. The UK consists of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland.

  3. The flag of the country consists of some crosses. It is called the Union Jack.

  4. The UK is a monarchy. The head of the country is the queen. Today the queen is Elizabeth ll.

  5. The royal family is the symbol of the country. The most important monarchs were Henry lV, Elizabeth l, Victoria.

  6. Today the queen has no real power. She reigns but doesn’t rule. She has only representative functions.

  7. Buckingham Palace is the home of the Queen .There are 600 rooms in it. It has a swimming pool and a cinema.

  8. The real power belongs to the British Parliament. The Houses of Parliament is the place where it sits. Big Ben is the name of the clock in one of the towers.

  9. You can see many interesting sights in Britain . One of the most popular places is the Tower of London .It is the oldest place in London. It was a palace, a prison, a zoo. Today it is the museum.

  10. Westminster Abbey was founded in 730-740.All British kings and queens are crowned there. It is the place where many famous people were buried. (Newton, Dickens, Kipling)

  11. The Tower Bridge was built in the XlX century. It is one of the oldest bridges in London. It is the symbol of the city.

  12. The London Eye is one of the modern sights. It was opened in 2000.It is 135 m. You can see the whole city from it.

  13. Trafalgar Square is the most popular place for people to meet . In the middle of the square there is Nelson’s Column which is 51 m high.

  14. The London Underground is one of the oldest in the world.

  15. A lot of tourists visit famous Stonehenge in the south-west of England. This place is connected with Druids.

  16. British people are proud of their traditions. Only in London you can see red double-deckers.

  17. Red telephone boxes are from the XlX century.

  18. The uniform of royal guards is famous all over the world.

  19. This man guards the Tower of London. He is called a Beefeater.

  20. The British does not use EURO. They use pounds and pence.

  21. There are many holidays in Britain. The most favorite is Christmas. It is celebrated on the 25th of December. They give presents, decorate Christmas trees, eat traditional food: roast turkey and Christmas pudding.

  22. On the 14th of February they celebrate St.Valentine’s Day. They give each other Valentine’s Cards.

  23. All children like Halloween. They go from house to house and say," Trick or treat!” People celebrate Halloween on the 31 st of October.
