  3. Trentino • Trentino is an autonomous province of Italy. Trentino is, along with South Tyrol, one of the two provinces which make up the region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, which itself is an autonomous region. Its capital is the town of Trento. Trentino is renowned for its mountains, such as the Dolomites.

  4. Facts about cooperatives and Trentino • More than two hundred and twenty seven thousand individuals, in a population of approximately five hundred thousand inhabitants in Trentino, are members of cooperatives. • This means that two families in every three are involved in the cooperative movement. • Not only that!  If the number of existing cooperatives, a few more than six hundred, is compared with the number of municipal areas, 217, it is easy to understand how widespread the presence of the cooperative movement is in the Trentino communities. • The extended entrenchment throughout the territory and its presence in almost all the economic activity sectors, with peaks of excellence at a national level, make Trentino a true “cooperative district” like few others in the world.

  6. Progettone • Locally taxed and funded programme • Running since 1980 • Supporting over 1300 people • Women over 45 • Men over 50 • Must be registered unemployed for 12 months • Referral via “AgenziaLavoro” – (Job Centre Plus) • Try to find the best employment solution for participants

  7. Types of Employment • Social Care • Environmental Projects • Public sector Retail

  8. Terms and Conditions • Wages approx. €1,000 per month • Period up to 14 months • Opportunity to change sectors • Contributions • Employer 10% to 20% • Progettone 80% to 90%

Lessons Learnt • Cooperatives and Social Enterprises are a good way to develop inclusive systems that support all ages. • Government funding to support older workers to get back into the labour market helps to create sustainable employment. • Public funded projects including social care, environmental projects and retail are all attractive opportunities for older workers. • The Cooperative movement started in the UK and we could learn a lot about how this approach creates inclusive and sustainable opportunities for older workers.
