  1. Safety Guidelines forClassroom and Office Presented by: Mrs. Rosas Career & Technology Education Department

  2. Objective: While working in a simulated office the student will identify common safety hazards and demonstrate skills in creating and maintaining a safe environment.

  3. Electrical Equipment Safety rules protect the operator of the equipment, other persons in the environment, and the equipment itself.

  4. Do not unplug equipment by pulling on the electrical cord. (Instead, grasp the plug at the outlet.) Do not stretch an electrical cord across and aisle where someone might trip over it. Do not overload extension cords. Replace frayed electrical cords immediately. Guidelines Electrical Equipment

  5. Avoid food and beverages near equipment where a spill might result in an electrical short. Do not attempt to remove the cover of equipment for any reason while the power is turned on. Do not attempt to repair equipment while it is plugged in. To avoid damage, most repairs should be done by an authorized service technician. Guidelines for Electrical Equipment

  6. Guidelines for Electrical Equipment 8.Turn off the power or unplug equipment when finished using it. (Microcomputers may be an exception. In the office this equipment usually is turned on at the start of the day and turned off at the end of the day. In classrooms, students may be directed to leave a microcomputer ready for the next student to use without booting.) 9. Do not lean over equipment that has moving parts when wearing a long necklace, tie, scarf, loose sleeves , or other clothing that could get caught in the machinery. Personal injury could result in addition to equipment, jewelry, or clothing damage.

  7. Guidelines for Electrical Equipment • Exercise caution when using chemicals such as toner and duplicating fluids to avoid spills. Some chemicals are toxic. • Follow manufacturer (Underwriter’s Laboratories) recommendations for safe use. • Use static control mats under your chair to safeguard electronic data and equipment.

  8. Microcomputers In addition to the general safety issues when using equipment, the following cautions apply.

  9. Guidelines for Microcomputers 1. Do not insert pencils or other implements in disk drives to avoid damage to the drives. 2. Avoid blocking air vents to prevent overheating. 3. Position keyboard to prevent bumping or dropping them off the work surface.

  10. Monitors

  11. Guidelines for Monitors • Do not attempt to repair the monitor. Most manufacturers advise repair by authorized service technicians only. 2. Adjust brightness and focus for comfortable viewing. 3. Avoid glare on the monitor screen. 4. Do not leave fingerprints on the screen and keep the screen clear of dust. Only use a soft cloth for cleaning the screen.

  12. Disks (Secondary Storage Devices) The following precautions should be heeded to avoid damage to data and programs.

  13. Guidelines for Disks • Put “write protect” tabs on all program software to avoid erasing the contents accidentally. • Do not bend or fold disk. • Do not play with disk shutter. • Do not write on a disk with a hard or sharp-pointed pen or pencil use a felt-tip marker. • Do not touch exposed surfaces of disks; handle the disk label.

  14. Guidelines for Disks • Do not insert or remove a disk while the disk drive is active. • Keep disks away from extreme hot or extreme cold temperatures. Do not leave disks in a car during very hot or very cold weather. • Keep disks away from magnetic fields such as transformers and magnets.

  15. Safety Guidelines for Disks • Keep disks stored in the storage envelope. • Do not leave disks in the disk drive for prolonged periods, such as overnight. • Keep disks away from dust.

  16. Work Areas and Furnishings Create and Maintain a Safe Work Station

  17. Guidelines for Work Areas and Furnishings • Store sharp objects, such as scissors and sharpened pencils, flat. Keep sharp objects away from the edges of surfaces where they may be knocked off and puncture feet. • Store sharp objects such as pins and thumbtacks in covered containers to avoid puncture wounds. • Avoid clutter to prevent, slipping, tripping, falling, and collision injuries. • Use a staple remover rather than a fingernail to remove staples. • Do not examine a jammed stapler by holding it near your eyes or testing it over your finger.

  18. Guidelines for Work Areas and Furnishings • Avoid eating or drinking at the workstation so that spills and crumbs do not ruin your work. • Never reach into a drawer without first looking into it. • Do not push a drawer shut with your hand at the top or side of the drawer; use the handle instead. • Fill file drawers beginning at the bottom drawer an moving to the top drawer. On the other hand, empty file drawers from the top drawer down.

  19. Guidelines for Work Areas and Furnishings • Do not leave drawers open where someone may trip over them. • Set adjustable chairs for personal comfort and back support. • Be careful when sitting down in chairs that have casters. • Do not lean too far in any direction to avoid tipping over a chair.

  20. Guidelines for Work Areas and Furnishings • Replace static control mats that have curling edges. (Secure carpeting, tiles, mats, and other floor coverings to prevent slipping, tripping and falling injuries.) • Exercise caution when using step stools with casters or step ladders. Use ladders when reaching or storing materials. • Keep fingers away from paper cutter blades and NEVER leave the blade in an upright position. • Tape or sand sharp edges of furniture to avoid personal injury and damage to clothing.

  21. Emergency Procedures Report Fires and Other Emergencies

  22. Guidelines for Emergency Procedures • Post emergency telephone numbers (ambulance, fire department, 911, etc…) on or near each telephone. • Learn the location of the nearest fire exit, fire alarm box and fire extinguisher. Post a diagram showing these locations. • Learn emergency evacuation procedures, review / practice them regularly, and follow them precisely.

  23. Guidelines for Emergency Procedures • NEVER ignore a fire alarm or other evacuation alarm. • Avoid elevators during emergencies. • Learn the location of first-aid kits. (E102) • Inspect and restock first-aid kits frequently. • Learn the names and locations of those who are trained in first aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).

  24. Guidelines for Emergency Procedures • Do not tempt a potential thief by leaving personal valuables such as purses, checkbooks, jackets, and cash in plain sight. Keep personal belongings out of sight and locked in a drawer, file cabinet, locker, or closet. • Learn and follow security procedures, especially those that apply to being in the building during non-working hours. • Report unauthorized visitors immediately.

  25. Working Alone After Hours Recognize Other Hazardous Situations

  26. Guidelines for Working Alone After Hours • Always work near a phone and keep emergency telephone numbers nearby. • Lock all doors to work area. Do not open the door to anyone you are not expecting or cannot identify. • Become acquainted with maintenance staff and learn when to expect them.

  27. Guidelines for Working Alone After Hours • Do not use an elevator if anyone suspicious is in it. Stand next to the control buttons. • Park near the building entrance and near a light. • Check the parking lot visually before leaving the security of the building; then proceed to your vehicle by a well-lighted path.

  28. Guidelines for Working Alone After Hours • Keep car keys in hand ready to use. • Request an escort from security personnel if available.
