  1. Jamie Starkey, BA, MSW Candidate for Administrator – Department of Pupils and Programs

  2. Vision Statement To help children who are disadvantaged, whether from a physical, emotional, or learning disability, socioeconomic status, a poor support system, or personal, familial or community situation; learn social, academic, and job skills to become healthy, active and contributing members of our community.

  3. Education • Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from Mars Hill College received May 1999. • Masters of Social Work from Radford University received in May 2011. • Continuing Education1: • Since completing a MSW, I have continued to complete annual training in such topics as working with minority youth, reintegrating incarcerated youth into the community, developing program for gang involved youth, and development and assessment of programming for middle school youth.

  4. Practical Experience • Extensive experience in managing social workers and counselors within the school setting by using social and academic theories relevant to the student1, including providing supervision to clinical staff in training. • Development and evaluation of an after school counseling program for disadvantaged youth used to increase parental participation2 and decrease behavioral problems. After the first year, all students who entered the program successfully completed and showed a 60% decrease and behavioral difficulties in the school and community3. • Managed a $1.1 million dollar budget which included supervision of 20 school social workers and three after school programs.

  5. Practical Experience (cont.) • Served on the Board of Directors for Straight Street and the Boys and Girls Club. In this capacity I was able to help envision services and programming that integrate the students’ academic needs (i.e. – tutoring and access to technology) with community needs (i.e. – after school programming and mentoring)1.

  6. Professional Strengths • Extensive experience working with youth from both suburban and urban school districts across the Roanoke Valley. • Ability to envision, develop, implement, and assess youth programming and services for youth at both the middle and high school levels. • Excellent communication skills1 that allow me to motivate and encourage employees to exceed the school system’s vision and goals. • Commitment to learning about emerging trends within the educational and mental health fields in order to ensure the ever-changing needs of the youth we serve are addressed and met.

  7. Summary of qualifications • Progressive management experience supervising clinicians who deal with a diverse population of middle and high school students1. • Demonstrated ability to design, implement and evaluate successful programs for students. • Commitment to meeting the needs of the students in our community through innovative programming and continued education2.
