  4. Alliances • Triple Alliance – Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy • Triple Entente – Britain, France, Russia • Belgium, Spain, Switzerland – neutral • Bulgaria & Turkey align with Alliance – becomes Central Powers • Italy switches sides and joins Allies

  5. Militarism • Build up of military • New weapons – dreadnoughts, planes, zeppelins, tanks, flame throwers, grenades, poison gas

  6. Powder Keg of Europe • Tension in the Balkans • Bosnian Serbs want independence from Austria-Hungary • Serbia wants to annex Bosnia • Austria wants to crush Serbian influence in Bosnia • Russia wants to control Balkans
