Magnetism and Magnets • Magnetism is a force field that acts on some materials but not on others. • Physical devices that posses this force are called magnets. • Magnets we use today are manufactured and often made from: • Copper, Nickel, Aluminum, Iron, and Cobalt • Lodestone is a natural magnet discovered centuries ago.

  3. Magnetic Fields, Flux, and Poles • The force of magnetism is referred to as a magnetic field and extends out from the magnet in all directions. • The invisible lines of force make up the magnetic field are known as flux. • If the lines of flux are dense, the magnetic field is strong, sparse and they are weak. • Magnetic lines of force (flux) are assumed to be continuous loops.

Magnetic Field, Flux, and Poles • Lines of magnetic force are always assumed to leave the north pole and enter the south pole of a magnet. • North Pole and South Pole • Refers to the polarity on the ends of a magnet. • Like magnetic poles repel each other. • Unlike magnetic poles create a force of attraction.

  5. Applications of Magnets Applications of magnets include: • Attractive or repelling force. • The use of a magnetic field to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. • The use of a magnetic field to convert mechanical energy to electrical energy. • Direct, shape, or control electron or ion beams. http://www.arnoldmagnetics.com/mtc/magnets_permanent_apps.htm
