What is a heritage survey • A technique for systematically identifying heritage places within a defined area • Aboriginal • Historic (themes and/or places) • Archaeological • A survey may include: • Thematic survey of key historical periods • Identifying places of significance • Engaging the community

When, Why, Who • Why? • To help make decisions about heritage protection, eg which places to enter into planning scheme Heritage Codes • To assist in strengthening community identity • To leverage tourism opportunities • When? • Best carried out when reviewing planning schemes • Who? • Local government (staff and elected officials) • State government bodies (Heritage Tasmania, Tasmanian Heritage Council) • Heritage property owners, historical societies, National Trust • Key industry, business and community groups • Heritage professionals

Method • Prepare • Establish project group • Develop project and communications plans • Clear aims and objectives • Clear roles and responsibilities • Timeframes • Secure additional resources • Consult Heritage Tasmania / Tasmanian Heritage Council • Available support • Information from the THR • Expertise and resources • In-house • In-kind assistance (libraries, historical groups) • Contract relevant expertise
