  2. 1st Grade Writing Assessment B Today we will begin working on a writing assessment that all 1st graders will complete. This is your chance to demonstrate your skills as a writer.

  3. Your assignment: • You will watch a video and listen to your teacher read an article. The video and article each tell about a different place that classes can visit for a field trip. • You will be writing your opinion about which place you think would be best for a class field trip and why.

  7. Article: The Shatto Milk Company

  8. Shatto Milk Company is a working dairy farm. They bottle many special flavors of milk. The dairy offers tours to groups of any size. Tours are $5 each and include lots of fun things for kids to do. You will get to see where milk comes from on a Shatto tour. Children can pet and feed calves. Then, you can see the farmer milk cows. After the milk is cleaned, you can watch it being put into bottles. Shatto uses glass bottles to keep the milk cold, provide the best flavor, and protect the environment. At the end of the milk tour, visitors may taste the special flavors: root beer, strawberry, orange crème, banana, chocolate and white milk. Shatto Dairy is a great place for classes to visit.

  11. Your Writing Imagine that you get to help the class decidewhich place would be best for a class field trip. What place do you think is best for a class field trip and why? Be sure to use information that you learned from the text read by your teacher and from the video in your writing.

  12. 30 minutes Plan: • Decide which place you would like to visit on a field trip: The Kansas City Zoo or Shatto Dairy Farm. • Illustrate your thinking. Now begin your work.

  13. 30 minutes Write: • Tell about the place you illustrated. 4. Think about the best facts from the video and text to explain your thinking. • Be sure to explain your reason why you would choose this place to visit. • Your teacher will collect your work.
