What is a TRANSITIVE verb? • A transitive verb is an ACTION verb that HAS a direct object. • Transitive verbs are ONLY action verbs (not helping/linking!)
What is a DIRECT OBJECT? • A DIRECT OBJECT is a noun or pronoun that names the receiver of a verb’s action. • It will always FOLLOW the action verb. • To find a direct object, look at the action verb and ask WHAT? or WHOM?
Find the DIRECT OBJECT • EX. That monkey loves bananas. • EX: The team’s new roster included Carlos. Action verb: loves That monkey loves what? Bananas– so bananas is your direct object. Action verb: included The roster included whom? Carlos– so Carlos is your direct object.
Transitive Verbs • Since both of these action verbs had a direct object, they are TRANSITIVE VERBS. • A direct object CANNOT BE INSIDE OF A PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE, so when you are trying to find the direct object of a verb, cross out any prepositional phrases. • Ex. Charles gave Amanda flowersfor her birthday. AV DO
Indirect Objects • Sometimes an action verb will also have an indirect object. An indirect object tells to what or whom or for what or whom an action is done. • When finding the indirect object, find the direct object first then ask yourself to what/whom or for what/whom the action is done. • The indirect object comes BETWEEN the action verb and the direct object.
Indirect Objects • A verb can ONLY have an indirect object IF IT HAS A DIRECT OBJECT, so action verbs that ALSO have indirect objects are STILL TRANSITIVE VERBS (because they have a direct object). • EX. Charles gave Amanda flowers for her birthday. Action Verb: gave What did he give? Flowers (direct object) To whom did he give flowers? Amanda– so Amanda is the indirect object
Intransitive Verbs • An intransitive verb is an ACTION verb that does not have a DIRECT or INDIRECT OBJECT. • Only ACTION verbs with no direct or indirect object are considered INTRANSITIVE (this does not apply to linking or helping verbs)
Intransitive Verbs • If there is an adverb (a word that tells where, when, how, or to what extent the verb was) following the verb INSTEAD OF a direct object, the verb is intransitive. • Ex. Some people drive carelessly. • - Carelessly tells HOW people drive, so it is an adverb, not a direct object. • - Since this sentence DOES NOT have a DIRECT OBJECT, the verb is INTRANSITIVE.
