Including All Children • Creative Curriculum’s Approach to Inclusion - See each child as a child – the whole child. - Having a disability is only one characteristic • Elements of Inclusion - It’s about belonging & participating - Programs, not children, need to be ready for inclusion - Collaboration is the cornerstone - Specialized instruction an important component - Adequate support is necessary to make inclusive environments work. - Inclusion can benefit children with and without disabilities
Background to the Collaboration • NMCAA Head Start/WMISD collaboration - 5 years and counting - getting ready - understanding and meeting each agency’s rules and regulations - communication is key • Description of the classrooms
The Process • Get to know the children. Include the parents • What are their needs to be successful? • Looking at the environment - Check traffic patterns and aisles - Tables allow accommodate adaptive equipment - Chairs allow for child’s feet to touch floor - Range of materials – puzzles • CC Implementation Checklist • Head Start Center for Inclusion Checklist • Developing a school family
Planning • Utilizing information at hand - data, observation, anecdotal information, work samples. • Differentiation and Individualization for all children • Keeping staff in the loop • Small Group Activity
