  3. What’s New????? Each Week we will spend a few minutes chatting about what is happening in our lives and in the lives of our loved ones. Our goal is to become more familiar with one another and build relationships. As this happens, we will enjoy the class more and as we have more fun, we will spend more time in the course, and we will learn more. :o)

Seminars • ???? for questions • Seminar Rubric Option 1 – Attend Seminar • Maximum Points Grading Criteria (25 Points) • 50%Content: Posts are on topic and contributes to the quality of the seminar (13 Points) • 25%Participation: Frequent interaction on concepts being discussed by students and instructor (6 Points) • 25%Attendance: Student arrives on time and stays the entire seminar (6 Points)

Alternate Assignment • 300 – 500 word summary of this week’s reading assignment. • Seminar Rubric Option 2 Assignments - The make-up assignment • Maximum Points Grading Criteria • 50%Content: Response is on topic, original, and contributes to the quality of the discussion. • 25%Participation: Response makes frequent, informed references to unit material • 25%Mechanics: Grammar and spelling is correct and meets minimum word requirement

DB – Requirements based on Grading Rubric (Doc Sharing) Timeliness & Frequency (25% of total point) • Responses to each discussion question are across at least three days during the unit • Responses are to several (3 – 5) students during the discussion(s) Clarity, Organization, Grammar , Mechanics • (25% of total points) • Contributions are clear and concise • Contributions are mechanically/grammatically correct

DB – Requirements based on Grading Rubric (Doc Sharing) Breadth and Depth of Responses (50% of total points) • Contributions – to each discussion question and to classmates - are thoughtful, include original evaluation, synthesis or analysis of the topic on the discussion board • Responses are relevant, meaningful, tactful, and original. • Responses advance the discussion on the discussion board

The Juvenile Justice System • In loco parentis- The legal concept of allowing the state to “act in place of the parents.” This gives the state the legal right to take away parental custody of children when it is in the best interests of the child. Gives states the authority to incarcerate, make decisions, and place into treatment. • Parens patriea- Act as parent in terms of handing down punishment (“parent of the country”)
