  1. Colton Reed January 23, 2014 Period 6/7 AG Careers And My SAE

  2. Weiser’s SAE • My SAE was working over the summer at Weiser’s farm market, and greenhouses. • I worked 7-5 from Monday to Friday. • My job was to pick fruits and vegetables. I also did maintenance on the greenhouses and stocked shelves and cashiered in the stand.

  3. Hillandale SAE • My SAE was working at Hillandale Gettysburg LP chicken farms • I unload chicks from the truck into the chicken house then put them all into cages. After that is done I load all the bins and put them back on the truck and check the water and shut the cages. • I hope to get a steady job there but by putting chicks in I have made some money.

  4. Career #1 Environmental Scientist • An environmental scientist’s job is to do research to protect the environment. • This can mean researching things like pollution, hazards, and any problems with the environment. • Global warming or water contamination to a river might be something they would research.

  5. Education • At least a Bachelor’s Degree in Natural science or a related field; a master’s would be most ideal. • Cost of the tuition would vary by school but would cost close to $25,000 per year. • Some good nearby schools that interest me are Penn State, Cornell, Syracuse, and Delaware

  6. Wages and outlook • The median pay is 61,700 or about 30 dollars an hour. • There are about 90,000 current jobs and that is expected to rise 19% by 2020 which is excellent. • Environmental scientists are employed by Federal, state and local governments. Private firms and companies as well as universities employ them.

  7. Working conditions • Most of the time Environmental Scientists are in a lab or office doing research or publishing there findings • They do spend time out in the field collecting samples and specimens. • I would want to stay somewhat local for my work but I would be okay with going to a bordering state. A possible place to be employed would be in D.C. or a university

  8. Classes • Classes like Biology, Chemistry, Plant and animal sciences, and probably most sciences for that matter • Mathematics and English would also be very important • A foreign language would be helpful
