Oxidation Number

Oxidation Number. Chemistry 2.7. Oxidation Number. Oxidation number ( ON ) describes the ‘degree’ to which an element has been oxidises or reduced. ON are written with the sign before the whole number (e.g. +3 or –1) E.g. For Mg 2+ ON( Mg) = +2 For Cl - ON( Cl ) = -1.

  1. Oxidation Number Chemistry 2.7

  2. Oxidation Number • Oxidation number (ON) describes the ‘degree’ to which an element has been oxidises or reduced. • ON are written with the sign before the whole number (e.g. +3 or –1) • E.g.ForMg2+ ON(Mg) = +2 For Cl- ON(Cl) = -1

  3. ON and the charge on a polyatomic ion are not the same thing. • E.g. For the permanganate ion, MnO4-, ON(Mn) = +7 ON(O) = -2 How can you work that out? See rules for oxidation numbers (p 59)
