  1. InterRISK & AMSA Insurance for the Men’s Shed

  2. The AMSA Insurance SchemeIntroduction • Who are InterRISK • Who is Sean McDermott • Public Liability – What is it • Auspicing – Are you really covered? • Duty of Care – How does it apply to you • What is the Insurance Scheme • Questions

  3. Who are InterRISK? • InterRISK was formed in 2004 • There are a number of branches nationwide with 2 in Sydney • A specialty schemes branch exists in Chatswood • Formerly headed by Sean McDermott • In house legal team & claims division

  4. Who is Sean McDermott • 7 years Risk Management experience • Worked as a broker and an underwriter • Specializes in a number of areas, particularly schemes • Has an affinity for Aviation • Worked for InterRISK over the last 2 years with the number one priority being AMSA

  5. Public Liability – What is it The technical terming of the policy wording is: • Subject to all provisions, terms, exclusions, conditions of this Policy, the Insurer agrees to indemnify You for all amounts which You shall become legally liable to pay as a result of Claims or Legal Proceedings for Personal Injury or Property Damage happening during the Period of Insurance and caused by an Occurrence within the Territorial Limits and arising from and within the course of the Business.

  6. Public Liability – What is it • Public liability is cover for loss, injury or damage to third parties or their property • AMSA has a $20,000,000 cover in place providing protection to all participating men’s sheds nationwide • Cover is Australia wide and covers the paid up members & those that are attending out of consideration of joining, standard practice has this pegged at 3 visits

  7. Public Liability - Examples Men’s shed holds a BBQ, the BBQ falls over and injures someone who is standing waiting for a sausage. This person suffers burns and is subsequently taken to Hospital requiring skin grafts. Unfortunately, the BBQ also fell on their handbag which destroyed the iPhone and other articles within. • Losses incurred: • Property Damage • Injury • Is this covered? • Yes

  8. Public Liability - Continued • Another example: • Jim is a member of XYZ, he is lathing and the chisel he is holding gets caught and hits Bob’s bag causing damage to Bob’s new iPhone 5S • Losses Incurred • Property Damage • Is it covered • The policy includes member to member cover, Yes.

  9. Public Liability – I’m covered for everything? • Short answer is No • The policy is designed to be very broad, however, there is a difference between a fundraising BBQ and a major event • Situations looked at closely relate to those where children are involved • Where the risk of loss is high • The organisation of markets • Group participation with the disabled or troubled youth • Commercial activities – Some sheds are running commercial operations operating for profit purposes. Commercial activities are excluded by the policy • If in doubt, call.

  10. Auspicing – Are you really covered? Generally speaking, the activities of the Men’s Shed fall so far outside the scope of those acceptable to the insurers of Auspicing bodies, that you could think you are covered, when you are NOT!

  11. Auspicing – Is it really cheaper? If you were to have a claim, would you want to know that you are protected, or would you like to be presented with a maybe circumstance.

  12. Auspicing – What our shed does: Which of these does your shed partake in? • Woodworking • Creating products • Creating props • Organising fundraising events 3 & potentially 4 of those things could be excluded by the auspicing body

  13. Duty of care; Is this a workplace? • You have a legal responsibility to take reasonable care to avoid yourself and others from getting injured • If you identify a hazard, you must take reasonable care in response to: • Mitigate • Minimize • Remove

  14. Duty of Care • Duty of care = • Safety • Safety • Safety • Common sense

  15. Duty of Care – Practical Advice • Have a safety register, a list of things that help focus safety in the shed space • Just because you have been doing one thing for 60 years, does not necessarily make it safe. Observe safety lessons and take them on board • Have within your shed, a designated person or persons that others can advise safety hazards to • Provide safety briefings • Have training sessions related to machinery • For goodness sake, use safety equipment • Failure to use safety equipment could jeopardise the shed along with the insurance scheme

  16. Packaged insurance – Batteries Included Covers provided: • Voluntary Workers Personal Accident • Public & Products Liability • Association Liability • Industrial Special Risks

  17. Packaged insurance – What should I know? Voluntary Workers Personal Accident covers those that are paid up members of their respective shed who partake in the AMSA scheme for out of pocket expenses following injury during a Men’s Shed sponsored activity Cover is for those up to 94 inclusive

  18. Packaged insurance – What should I know? Public & Products Liability covers the loss, injury or damage of third parties or their property Cover is for $20,000,000 per event and includes Member to Member cover *Each member is insured as if they were to each have their own policy

  19. Packaged insurance – What should I know? Association Liability provides protection to the committee members for their actions whilst a member of the committee.

  20. Packaged insurance – What should I know? Industrial Special Risks A policy designed to protect your shed assets. • Automatic acceptance irrespective of geographic location • $100,000 for Fire, Accident & Other perils for contents and/or building • $10,000 for burglary • Both limits can be topped up

  21. Packaged insurance – What should I know? The Cost The policy renews on the 1st of March every year. We are currently too far away to know the pricing for 2014/2015 Pricing for 2013/2014 was $25.50 per member for all covers Only one declaration of member numbers per year

  22. What next? • If you haven’t joined AMSA’s insurance scheme, why not? Perhaps you are waiting for the next renewal period, maybe your insurance is not due yet. Can you afford to wait?

  23. Sean’s final Hoorah • It has been a pleasure answering most of your questions over the last two years, and really getting to know some of you and your activities. • As mentioned, this is my last act for the Men’s Shed in this form as I leave InterRISK on Wednesday to spread my wings and fly like a peacock.

  24. Questions • Your burning questions could be used to help other sheds around the country, feel free to ask.
