  3. What is Distance Learning? Definition: Learning that does not require that the student be physically present in the same location as the instructor • In the past, distance learning was limited to correspondence study via postal service. • Today, audio, video, and computer technologies are commonly used to deliver the instructional materials

  4. What are some of the Good Points of Distance Learning? • Convenient location for the learner • Ability to self-schedule (time can be very flexible) • Can use a variety of mediums • Instructional materials can be accessed by multiple learners

  5. Doesn’t GLOBE currently use distance learning tools and techniques? • Yes, it does!! • GLOBE web site • On-line instructional materials • CD Rom based instructional materials • Protocol training via videos • Help desk

  6. What is different about the new GLOBE distance learning plans? • Focus on on-line course development in direct support of the face-to-face workshops • On-line courses can be pre and post requisites for face to face workshops • On-line courses can offer university or college credit for teachers • On-line courses will expand the instructional opportunities for GLOBE

  7. Who will be leading the expanded distance learning efforts? The new GLOBE Headquarters staff - UCAR and Colorado State University They bring extensive experience and expertise in the development, delivery, and evaluation of high quality distance learning programs

  8. Approach to expansion of GLOBE distance learning • Review of current GLOBE distance learning efforts • Special attention given to those that have been evaluated as to effectiveness • Work with workshop developers to determine on line course needs • Identify best practices in distance learning as they relate to GLOBE

  9. Online instructional strategies • Combination of: • Specified content text and images • Visualization and animations • List servs • Chat rooms • Each on-line course will have a dedicated instructor

  10. We envision four types of on-line courses 1. Orientation course for GLOBE teachers and administrators 2. Practicum for new trainers and teachers 3. Refresher courses for teachers and trainers 4. Topic specific courses

  11. Orientation to GLOBE • Offered prior to face to face workshops • Provides prospective trainers, teaches, and GLOBE partners with an overview of the GLOBE program and protocols

  12. Practicum for new trainers and teachers • Coupled to and immediately follows the TTT workshop • Accessed by computer from home or classroom • Enables new teachers and trainers to rapidly apply what they learned in TTT workshop • Focus on protocol implementation in the classroom • Teacher will receive on-line guidance, feedback, and peer-team and mentoring support

  13. GLOBE Refresher Course • Designed for individuals who have been to a TTT in the past but would like to update their knowledge • Will mirror the TTT workshop in terms of content • May be a good way to get inactive teachers back in the GLOBE community

  14. Topic Specific courses • Topic selection guided by requests from GLOBE trainers and partners • Possible topics • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) • Implementation of advanced protocols
