What Will My Child Be Learning This Year? How Can I Support My Child?
What are educational standards? Example: 1st Grade English Language Arts Standard: ELACC1RL2: Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson. (Main Idea) 3rd Grade English Language Arts Standard: ELACC3RL2: Recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from diverse cultures; determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text. 5th Grade English Language Arts Standard: ELACC5RL2: Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text. Educational standards help teachers ensure their students have the skills and knowledge they need to be successful by providing clear goals for student learning.
Why do we need common educational standards? • Educational Standards ensure: • all students, no matter where they live, are prepared for success in college and the workforce. • all students are receiving a high quality education consistently, from school to school and state to state. • teachers are provided a greater opportunity to share experiences and best practices within and across states that will improve their ability to best serve the needs of all students.
What do common educational standards offer students, parents, and teachers? The standards provide teachers and parents with a common understanding of what students are expected to learn. The standards: • are aligned with college and work expectations; • are clear, understandable, and consistent; • include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high order skills; • build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards; • are informed by other top performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society; • are evidence based.
Understanding the Standards: Why the Change? • English Language Arts: • Students will continue reading literature and writing stories • Students will read more texts that provide facts and knowledge in science and social studies. • Students will read more challenging texts and be asked more questions that require them to refer back to what they have read. • Students will build a strong vocabulary so they can comprehend challenging text. • Mathematics: • Teachers will concentrate on teaching a more focused set of math concepts and skills. • Students will be able to master key math concepts and skills in a more organized way throughout the year and from one grade level to the next. • Teachers will engage student in rich and challenging math content, focused on real-world problems in order to inspire greater interest in mathematics.
