Objectives • Upon successful completion of this tutorial, the student will be able to: • Identify Delicious. • Recognize its use for business, education, and personal. • Determine its advantages and disadvantages. • Create a Delicious account. • Install the Delicious bookmarking buttons. • Perform import/export functions. • Save web pages as favorites in Delicious. • Tag, organize, and share favorites. • Search for favorites (your personal and others). • Utilize the network and subscription features. • Discover the use of the Inbox.

  4. Introduction What is Delicious? Delicious is a free, web-based social bookmarking service that allows users to tag, save, manage and share favorite web pages from a centralized source. Its emphasis has a power of community and greatly improves how people discover, remember, and share on the Internet.

Uses for Delicious • Delicious can be used for personal, business, or educational use. • Manage favorites in one location and to another location. • Web based and free. • 24/7 access. • Categorize by interest, course title, topic, project, student, etc. • Can share favorites with others. • Can view others’ favorites (if allowed). • Communication feature to network with others, subscribe to others’ favorites, and have those resources sent to your inbox.

Advantages & Disadvantages • What are the advantages of using Delicious? • Web based, no need to remember URL’s. • 24/7 free access to web site. • Share resources with others. • Access from any machine or browser tool. • Password protected. • Unlimited space. • Save any web page you want. • Network with others, subscribe to others’ resources, and have those resources sent to your inbox. • What are the disadvantages of using Delicious? • Can’t access the web site if it is down, but unlikely.

Create Account • How to Create a Delicious Account: • Access http://www.delicious.com • Click Join Now to create a new account. • Enter Details of personal information, create user name, and password. • You will be given the opportunity to follow steps to import existing bookmarks from a computer. Later in the tutorial process, you will learn how to tag, organize, share, and search for your pages.

Install Bookmarking Buttons • How to Install Delicious Bookmarking Buttons: • Access the bookmarking button download at: http://delicious.com/help/bookmarklets • Make sure your "Links Toolbar" is visible. If it is not, right click on any part of the menu bar and make sure "Links" is checked. • Click here to install the bookmarklets. (go through the download process to install the bookmarking buttons).

Import/Export Feature • How to Use the Import/Export Feature: • Bookmarks stored on your computer can be transferred to Delicious so that you can access the favorites from any computer connected to the Internet. • Access the Import feature at: https://secure.delicious.com/settings/bookmarks/import

  10. Saving Web Pages • How to Save Web Pages using Delicious: • When saving web pages as bookmarks, the URL will be saved along with the title of the web page, which you will have access to change. You will be given the chance to make comments in the Notes section. You will be able to give the bookmark an assigned Tag. Lastly you will have the option to share or not to share you saved bookmarks. • Access the Save bookmark feature at: http://delicious.com/save

  11. Tag Feature • What is the Tag Feature and How to Use It: • Tags are simple keywords or labels that you can use to describe and organize your bookmarks. A tag cloud is a way to view tags where the most-used tags are bigger and the less-used ones are smaller (the size reflects popularity). This can help you visually understand and navigate a large collection of bookmarks. • Access the Tag feature at: http://delicious.com/tag/ • After you save your bookmark, you will be given the option to label your tags as you wish.

  12. Organize Favorites • How to Organize Favorites: • Organizing your favorites are possible by managing Tag Bundles, which is a way to group existing tags into categories. For example, tags labeled as design, painting, and drawing can be group or bundled as art. • Access the Managed Tag Bundles feature at: https://secure.delicious.com/settings/tags/bundle • Click the CreateTag Bundle button. • Enter the name of your bundle. • Type the tags you previously saved to add to the bundle. • Click Save.

  13. Share Favorites • How to Share Favorites: • After saving a web page as a bookmark, you will be given the option to save the title of the web page, enter notes, and create tags as you wish. If you wish to share the bookmark, leave the Share checkbox unchecked. If you wish to opt from sharing, click in the Do Not Share checkbox, then click Save. • Access the option to Share at: http://delicious.com/save

  14. Search Favorites • How to Search for Favorites: • Searching for favorites or others’ resources is made easy with the Search tool. Searches can be made by • Delicious • My Bookmarks • My Network Bookmarks • Everyone’s Bookmarks

  15. Network • How to Network using Delicious: • Your Network is an easy way to view all the bookmarks saved by interesting people, such as your friends, coworkers, and favorite bloggers. After you add them to your Network, this page will collect and display all their recent bookmarks for you to enjoy. • To add a person to your Network, visit their bookmarks page and click Add to my Network from the top right of that page. Or, if you already know their username, you can type it in by selecting Add a user to Network from the top right of this page.

Subscriptions • How to use the Subscriptions in Delicious: • http://delicious.com/subscriptions/voutlaw • Adding subscriptions all you to choose the Tag created from another user (if you know the user name of that person) and have them added to your account. • You have subscription options which allows you to add, edit, or create subscription bundles.

  17. Inbox • How to use the Inbox: • This is where you'll find bookmarks that have been sent to you by other users. When you receive a bookmark, the little mail icon in the top right corner will let you know. • To send a bookmark to another person's Inbox, tag the bookmark with “for:” followed by their username, like “for:auser”. That person might even send you one back! • If you add people to your Network, it's even easier to send them bookmarks, because when saving a bookmark, the People tab will contain their names. You can click those names to automatically add “for:” tags with their usernames.
