  11. Small or Independent Producers • Production from a few hundred to a hundreds of thousand birds • May have own breeding lines • Value the same as similar birds in large commercial operations, unless owner can demonstrate with production, financial and tax records their birds are worth more

  12. Feral Birds • Owned by no one, yet could be a community food resource • Their elimination may be important in disease control • Methods for obtaining such birds • Government paid hunters • But doesn’t address loss value to the community • Pay bounty for dead birds presented to government officials • Bounty must be less than indemnity paid for backyard birds

  13. Fighting Cocks • Ownership is legal, but the fighting may not be • Ability to fight gives rise to increased value • Moral dilemma • Paying more for birds that fight may be viewed by the public as government endorsement of cock fighting which can cause public relations problems • However, such owners are often expert at avoiding government officials and will hide their birds during a disease outbreak • May want to develop government or official fighting pits • Would allow disease testing of such birds • Also generate tax revenue • Work with such owners before an outbreak • Establish typical distribution of quality within a fighting bird flock and values associated with various quality levels

  14. Specialty Birds • Birds with very unique characteristics • Examples: racing pigeons, rolling skating parrot • How to value such characteristics? • Expert opinion • Need to be careful of bias, especially if expert is not experienced in appraisal methods • May want to have a maximum valuation
