  2. Web Class – Goals • Make a simple web page (or series of pages) • Upload that page to the internet • Feel comfortable maintaining that page outside of this classroom

  3. Tools • HTML editor • Allows you to create a web page with little/no knowledge of HTML, the web page language • Microsoft Frontpage (free at the computer labs) • File Transfer Protocol (FTP) tool • Allows you to move your web page and all the web page info to the place on the internet where it can be seen • FTP Commander (free on the web)

  4. Microsoft Frontpage • “My Documents” and create a directory of your group’s name • Start Frontpage • Save the file in Frontpage as index.html

  5. Microsoft Frontpage – it’s just like Microsoft Word • Add text • Add a table • Add a picture • Add a link • Add an e-mail address • SAVE!!!!

  6. Copying Files to the Internet • First you need permission • Contact the technology committee at technology@pittmed.pitt.edu if you need permission

  7. FTP • FTP to unixs.cis.pitt.edu • When prompted, enter Pitt userid and password • Look at the box on the right-hand side – this is the target / host / internet computer • The file whose name is “..” means go back a directory • Click on “..” until you are at “afs/pitt.edu”

  8. FTP – What to Click Next • “home” • “p” • “i” • “pittmed” • “public” • “html” • “groups” • [group name]

  9. FTP – Almost there… • With the right window showing the correct target, we’ll make the left window show the correct source • Click the “ChgDir” button • Type “w:\” • Click on My Documents • Click on your directory name

  10. FTP – you’re there. • Select from your target the files that you wish to copy “up” to the server • Click the “”arrow • Open up a new Explorer • Type in “www.pittmed.pitt.edu/[groupname]”

  11. The Future… • Create multiple pages and upload them at will • Download your existing pages, change the information and upload them back again • Send other people links to your site’s web page
