This is Gold. Gold is an element.

An ELEMENT is a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances under ordinary circumstances.

This means that if you kept cutting it up into smaller and smaller pieces, like Democritus said, it will still be gold.

The smallest piece you would be left with would be an atom of gold.

An ATOM is the smallest unit, or piece, of an element.

This is water. Water is not an element. (it’s a molecule.)

Water can easily be broken down into smaller substances…

…Hydrogen…

…and Oxygen.

…and energy levels (or rings or clouds) containing the

electrons.

Electrons in the outermost level are called valence electrons and are used for bonding to make compounds.

The nucleus can be broken down even further though, into its subatomic particles…

…protons are charged particles in the nucleus with a mass of 1 amu (atomic mass unit)…

…and neutrons are particles in the nucleus that have no charge & a mass of 1 amu…

…and electrons are charged particles found in clouds around the nucleus with negligible mass.

The bigger the atom, the bigger the nucleus and the more clouds or levels it will have for the electrons.

The number of protons AND neutrons in the nucleus is called the atomic mass.

The larger the atom, the more protons and neutrons, so the larger the atomic mass, too.

To find the number of neutrons in an atom, subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass.

Carbon has an atomic mass of 12 and an atomic number of 6…

…this means that 12 (protons and neutrons) minus 6 (just protons)…

…equals 6 neutrons.

How about some helpful hints? There have to be some easy shortcuts.

Structure Of The Atom

Hint #1: In its atomic state, every atom has the same number of electronsas protons.

Which means that not only does the atomic number tell you the number of protons, but also the number of electrons

Hint #2: The period (row going across ) that the atom is in on the periodic table tells you how many electron levels or clouds the atom has.

The element Seaborgium has an atomic number of 106 and is in period 7 of the periodic table. How many electrons does it have? How many energy levels?
