  2. History of Sears Homes • The Winona bungalow is a popular American cottage type home. • The owners could build the house from pre-cut pieces and literally build it themselves.

  3. Visual Analysis • This picture is a black and white print and was made in 1935. • The house looks very idyllic and the viewer can infer that there may even be a white picket fence out of view. • This picture paints a vivid image of the typical American home of the 1930’s.

  4. Historical and Contextual Analysis • At the time when this picture was printed, America was going through the Great Depression. Many people could not afford to buy luxurious homes or have houses custom-built for their family. • Sears came up with the idea of selling pre-cut houses that were easy to build and sold for a cheaper price than custom-built houses.

  5. Significance • This picture is significant because it shows that even though people were struggling to make ends meet, they would not have to give up their dream of owning the ‘idyllic American home’. • The Winona Sears Honor-Bilt Home represented a cheaper, attainable dream that many Americans had.
