  1. Unit Performance Recognition Program INTRODUCTION David Mitchko Mercer area District Commissioner commissioner@mad-bsa.org

  2. What is Journey to Excellence? Journey to Excellence replaces the Centennial Quality Unit Awards for 2011 It is a means of recognizing Unit Leaders for their efforts Goals are set by the BSA Three performance levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold

  3. When does this program start? • Journey to Excellence will begin on January 1st • 2010 is the last year for the Centennial Quality Unit Awards - units have until December 31st to submit their form for this award. • The new 2011 forms are available now • Units are not required to set goals for 2011

  4. What’s new about this program? • There is now a separate form for Packs, Troops and Crews • The six “criteria” for quality unit have been expanded to thirteen “objectives” • For each objective, three levels of performance are defined – this adds a lot more detail to the form • Most of the criteria from the old award have been retained as objectives and renumbered • There are 4 new Pack and 6 new Troop objectives

  5. Retained Criteria for Packs

  6. New Objectives for Packs Possible Challenges for Silver/Gold • Day/Resident Camp participation (#6) • Service Projects (#7) • Webelos to Scout Transition (#9) • Annual Assessment (#13) • Outdoor Activities – 4 for silver, 5 for gold • Service Projects – 3 for silver, 4 for gold • Leadership Planning – specific dates for silver & gold • Have a written and reviewed budget

  7. Retained Criteria for Troops

  8. New Objectives for Troops • Long Term Camping (#6) • Patrol Method (#7) • Service Projects (#8) • Webelos to Scout Transition (#9) • Courts of Honor (#11) • Annual Assessment (#13) Possible Challenges for Silver/Gold • Recruitment – 5% for silver, 10% for gold • Yearly weekend campouts - 8 for silver, 10 for gold • Have a written and reviewed budget

  9. Bronze, Silver or Gold? • These levels were set by the BSA, by studying the past performance of some sample units. • If your unit is able to achieve the current Centennial Quality Unit Award, then you should have no problem attaining at least Bronze • The majority of units should be able to achieve Silver, if they make the effort • The Gold level was established for recognizing only the units with the best program. • Early next year, Unit leaders would need to decide which level to go for and what they need to do to get there. Do a sanity check using this year’s numbers.

  10. In Conclusion This new program is a great way of recognizing the hard work of your unit’s leaders In order to participate, you must familiarize yourself with the new objectives early in the year, set reasonable goals and plan accordingly. In striving to reach these objectives, you will be delivering the best possible program to the youth
