  4. Separation of powers • Federal power is separated into 3 branches; Legislative, Executive, & Judicial

  5. Checks and Balances Each branch can check the others No one branch can dominate another

  6. Republican form of Government • Representatives are freely elected for limited terms by the people (popular sovereignty)

  7. Limited Government • Power of the national government is limited by Constitution

  8. Bill of Rights Protection from a strong government

  9. Flexibility Ability to change with the times: elastic clause, amendment process, judicial review

Goals of the Constitution • “We the people of the United States, in order to • form a more perfect Union, • establish justice, • insure domestic tranquility, • provide for the common defense, • promote the general welfare, • and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution of the United States of America.”
