  1. Inertia and mass Please begin your bellwork Thanks!

  2. Bellwork: pick up the workbook and get out your notebook • Write your name in your WORKBOOK.

  3. Main objective for today: • Understanding the relationship between inertia, mass AND weight

  4. Inertia • Inertia : the resistance an object has to a change in its state of motion

  5. What does state of motion mean? • This is defined by its velocity – the speed with a direction. • Thus inertia could be redefined as follows: • Inertia: tendency of an object to resist changes in its velocity. • So… an object at rest has ______ velocity • And in the absence of an unbalanced force, it will __________ with a ________ velocity. • An object in motion with a velocity of 2 m/s East will (in the absence of an unbalanced force)remain in motion with a velocity of 2 m/s, East • AND if an object is not changing its velocity, then it is said to have no __________________. • Inertia: tendency of an object to resist accelerations.

  6. Mass as a measure of the Amount of Inertia • Mass is that quantity that is solely dependent upon the inertia of an object. • The tendency of an object to resist changes in its state of motion varies with mass.

  7. WEIGHT • = the force of gravity • =mass x 9.8m/s² • Measured in Newtons (mass is measured in kg)

  8. Convert your weight to newtons • 1kg = 2.2 lb

  9. Inertia lab • Conduct the lab and explain each in your notebook. • Paper ring/penny • Paper under beaker • Candy inertia

  10. A more massive object has a greater tendency to resist changes in its state of motion. • 2 brick example. How could we determine the lighter brick • Give them an identical push. The brick that offers the least resistance is the brick with the least inertia – and therefore the brick with the least mass.

  11. Newton’s first law • Sometimes referred to as the law of inertia • Official: An object at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. • Write your own definition…

  12. Mr. Rouk’s version • “Stuff likes to keep doin what it’s doin.”

  13. Epic inertia demo • ‘smash brick on hand’ • End 10-4-13
