Born in 1343 • No one knows the exact date, it was supposedly in the year of 1400 • Died between the ages of 56 and 57 • In 1359-1360 Chaucer went to France with Edward III's army during the Hundred Years' War. • He was captured in the Ardennes and returned to England after the treaty of Brétigny in 1360. • There is no certain information of his life from 1361 until 1366, when he perhaps married PhilippaRoet. • Philippadied in 1387
Between 1367 and 1378 Chaucer made several journeys abroad on diplomatic missions • He moved to Kent where he was appointed as justice of the peace. He was also elected to Parliament. • During this time he wrote some of his best poetrey.

Influences Linguistic influences - Chaucer wrote in continental accentual-syllabic meter, a style which had developed since around the twelfth century as an alternative to the alliterative Anglo-Saxon metre • His poetry also helped standardize the London dialect • He used English when other poets were still using Anglo-Saxon and Latin
