Participants • University of Victoria • Physics, astronomy and mechanical engineering department • Simon Fraser University • National Research Council of Canada (HIA) • DAO---scientists and engineers to work on AO and CE modules • DRAO---LAR group to work on AR Module • Industry: • ASA---1 engineer for 1 year on AO and AR modules • AGO Environmental---winches for AR module • EHR Optical Systems---optical design for AO test-bed • Adaptive Optics Associates---principal supplier for AO module • UVic grad students, co-op students and postdocs • Other interested people

ELIDA - Background • CFI (Canada Foundation for Innovation) grant • Collaboration between: • University of Victoria Mechanical Engineering • University of Victoria Physics and Astronomy • Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics / National Research Council • Simon Fraser University Applied Sciences • Industry • Three areas of research • Adaptive optics laboratory • Cryogenic/high vacuum laboratory • Airborne receiver / LAR prototype

Adaptive Optics Laboratory • P.I.: Dr. Inna Sharf, Uvic mechanical engineering • Goals: • Build an MCAO laboratory bench including turbulence and source generators. • Demonstrate MCAO concept. • Assess performance of MCAO. • Develop and test new control algorithm. • Investigate miniature AO (MEMs). • Use the bench to educate students. • Duration: 2 years (2001-2002)

Main equipment • 2 MEMs DMs (OKO or Boston Micro Machines) • 1 slow WFS (mini-Wavescope from AOA) • 2 fast WFS (~ 700 Hz, AOA) • Components for 2 fast WFS (AOA, integrated @ UVic) • Control computer and software (AOA) • Updated and modified in house • Tip-tilt mirror (vendor TBD) • Turbulence generator (developed at Uvic) • LGS / NGS source generator (developed at Uvic / HIA) • Auxillary optics
