THE DENTAL HISTORY • How often do you go to the dentist? • How often do you brush your teeth and how long for? • What types of dental treatment have you had previously? • What are your favorite drinks/foods? • Do you grind your teeth or bite your nails?
Medical history • Have you ever had: • Rheumatic fever? • Diabetes? • Epilepsy? • Tuberculosis? • Jaundice? • Hepatitis? • Other infectious disease? • Any problems with bleeding • Allergic to penicillin • Heart trouble or high blood pressure • Any surgery in the past
Oral examination: Develop a systematic approach: • External oral examination for swellings, asymmetry • Internal Oral examination : • Oral hygiene • Soft tissues e.g. Any ulcer • Periodontal condition • Chart the teeth present • Examine each tooth in turn
Percussion is carried out by gently tapping adjacent and suspect teeth with the end of a mirror handle. • A positive response indicates that a tooth is extruded due to exudates in apical or lateral periodontal tissues • Mobility of teeth is ⇑ by ⇓ in the bony support (e.g. Due to Periodontal disease or an Apical abscess) and also by fracture of root or supporting bone
Palpation of the buccal sulcus next to a painful tooth can help to determine if there is an associated apical abscess • Biting on to gauze or rubber can be used to try and elicit pain due to a cracked tooth • Application of cold: This is most practically carried out using ethyl chloride
