  1. Soil Analysis Lab You will eventually do a write-up of this lab, so make sure your notes are clear and you understand what you are doing!

  2. Soil Analysis • Zero balance • Pass soil through screen onto filter • Take the mass of the soil & filter (NO SPILLING) • Dry filter paper = 0.97g • Calculate the Soil Mass • Microwave 1 min at a time until all the water evaporates and the mass does not change • Dry filter paper = 0.97g • Calculate the DRY Soil Mass • Pour soil into DRY graduated cylinder • Tamp down until it no longer settles • Measure DRY Soil Volume

  3. Pour into filter and set “bundle” in water • Don’t lose any!!! • Must be fully saturated (poke if needed) • Lift out and wait until there are no drips for 30 sec • Take the mass of the WET soil & filter • Wet filter paper = 3.79g • Calculate the WET Soil Mass • Use the graduated cylinder to mark the dry soil volume on jar, as well as + 10 ml and -10ml • Transfer all soil into jar (rinse off filter into jar) • Swirl soil with water and let settle overnight • Measure WET Soil Volume
