  1. Summary of WG PPL discussion 25 Sept. 2006 • Participants: • Martin Hagen, Sabine Göke, Evelyne Richard, Michael Kunz, • Stefanie Wassermann, Thorsten Schaberl, Reinhold Steinacker • Supplements to the list of instruments: • - TARA location unclear (meanwhile: preference for AMF site) • - CNRS RONSARD radar will not participate • - Nancy weather radar to be Dopplerized, when ? (contact J. Parent) • - Number of MRR and their distribution  GOP, Gerhard Peters • - French instruments will be located in Vosges • - Location of FZK WTR close to MRR network for vert. air vel. estimation ? • - French wind profiler available  Vosges • - DLR lightning detection system (6 stations) available to enhance LMU/nowcast network (also in France) Summary of WG PPL discussion, 4th COPS workshop, Sept. 2006

  2. Instruments continued: • - Rain gauges to be located after positioning of radars and in accordance with operational gauges and other surface stations. • Requirements for the operation centre: • - Radars provide quicklooks, Regional radar composite including S-Pol and Poldirad (reflectivity, particle classification, dual-Doppler winds).Like “Mountain Zebra” during MAP. • - Radars (S-Pol and Poldirad) need information about selected missions and planned aircraft tracks. Summary of WG PPL discussion, 4th COPS workshop, Sept. 2006

  3. Aircraft operation: • - BAe146: what kind of microphysics mission are planned ?Flight pattern ? What kind of particles ? Graupel possible ? • - S-Pol and Poldirad need information about actual flight pattern, radio and/or data link ? • Mission planning: • - Most instruments are operated continuously. • - S-Pol, Poldirad and other manual operated instruments need information about selected missions, especially when aircraft are involved. Radar scans will be generic, but could be defined for each mission. Radar scans can be adapted according to actual weather development. Summary of WG PPL discussion, 4th COPS workshop, Sept. 2006

  4. Supersites: • S1 Hornisgrinde, S2 Offenburg, S3 ??, S4 Donon (France, northern part of Vosges, already used by French community) X-band (20 km range) radar could cover windward and lee side of Vosges.
