  1. LLW/MLLW National Disposition Strategy Gary R. Peterson, P.E. U.S. Dept. of Energy

  2. GOAL To develop a long-range corporate strategy to manage LLW/MLLW

  3. Specifically the LLW/MLLW National Disposition Strategy will: • Integrate site waste disposition plans. • Examine MLLW streams without a current treatment or disposal path, i.e. “orphan” waste streams. • Ascertain any bottlenecks and/or gaps in LLW/MLLW treatment or disposal. • Assess DOE and commercial disposal options. • Possibly recommend a corporate LLW/MLLW data system.

  4. Phases • The LLW/MLLW National Disposition Strategy will be developed in two phases. • Phase I will examine selected DOE sites with a significant quantity of EM LLW/MLLW • Phase II will examine those DOE sites not included in Phase I.

  5. Oak Ridge Savannah River Site Idaho National Lab Hanford (to include the Office of River Protection) Fernald Closure Project Miamisburg Closure Project Portsmouth Project Paducah Site Phase I Sites

  6. Current Status • Developed a draft Waste Breakdown Structure (WBS) to categorize LLW/MLLW streams. • Collected LLW/MLLW data from Phase I sites. • Data was collected from each site “as is”. No effort was made to correlate waste data.

  7. Current Status (Continued) • Listed MLLW orphan waste streams from each Phase I site. • Developed a preliminary draft of the Phase I National Disposition Strategy Report and distributed for comment.

  8. Waste Information Management System (WIMS) • WIMS was developed by the Hemispheric Center for Environmental Technology, Florida International University, under DOE sponsorship. • We are considering the use of WIMS as part of the corporate LLW/MLLW data collection system.

  9. Waste Information Management System • WIMS can be found at: http://wimsweb.hcet.fiu.edu/wims • There is no need for a user name or password at this time.

  10. Draft Waste Breakdown Structure (WBS)

  11. Waste Breakdown Structure (WBS) • The WBS categorizes LLW/MLLW streams by site, waste stream, treatment and disposal site. • The purpose is to provide a consistent basis for comparing LLW/MLLW streams from various sites. • Currently in draft.

  19. Notes • For the Treatment Site and Disposal Site levels (5 & 6), we will also include an R or T designator to indicate rail or truck transport mode.

  20. Next Steps • Gather data, per the WBS, on off-site LLW/MLLW streams from the Phase I sites. • Map the off-site waste streams in an integrated schedule. (WIMS?) • Conduct a gap analysis on the Phase I waste streams. • Consider the possibility of a centralized LLW/MLLW database.
