  2. Charlottetown Conference • The Charlottetown Conference was held on September 1st, 1864. • In Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The purpose was to form some kind of union between the Maritime colonies.

  3. While people were talking about the union of the Maritime colonies, new events occurred. • The first was renewed interest in the intercolonial railway in the Canadas, by the Canadian Government. • The Canadian now approved the bill that they had previously rejected. • The Canadas would pay for the whole railway project.

  4. Charlottetown Conference The second event was the formation of the Great Coalition. • Leaders of the Great Coalition requested their presence be allowed to present their proposal for Confederation. • The Maritime colonies were encouraged by the renewed Canadian interest and said yes.

  5. Charlottetown Conference At the conference: • Fifteen men attended • They were delegates from the Maritime colonies: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island • Newfoundland did not attend • The Canadians waited on Queen Victoria, which was anchored in Charlottetown Harbour

  6. Charlottetown Conference In the Council Chamber: • Maritime union was rejected -economies were too small -populations were too small There would pretty much be no benefit to have a Maritime union. • Started to talk about the Canadians’ proposal of Confederation

  7. Charlottetown Conference • They figured the confederation of the British colonies in North America might be more beneficial • A second meeting was set, the Quebec Conference to discuss it more • The Canadians threw a gala ball when the Charlottetown Conference ended

Charlottetown Conference • As the Canadians travelled around, they brought word with them about Confederation. • They were determined to get everyone on board with their idea. • They gave speeches stating that “confederation of the colonies would mark the beginning of a strong and prosperous nation”.
