  1. Welcome to 4th Grade! This version contains the information slides only – no links. Just keep clicking the mouse or the down arrow.

  2. Handouts and other pages are posted on the webpage – please look there if you would like to view or print any of them. Please feel free to email me throughout the year if you have a concern or a question. mirvin@shcslions.org

  3. Students will be required at all times to be reading an AR (Accelerated Reader) book. Links to find books and levels are available on our class computers and on the school webpage in the library section.

  4. 3 AR Book Reports will be due each quarter on books which are at a student’s AR reading level. (First book may be any level, but must be a chapter story book.) Books over 400 pages count as two books!

  5. Your child wants to read a book above your AR reading level? Read aloud test required - If a student makes more than 5 mistakes on a page when reading the text aloud, then it is too difficult of a book for independent reading. Choose again…

  6. Book Report Record- keeping has gone 21st Century in 4th Grade! Each student will have a unique Google document which he/she will use to record the book report information. No sign-in will be required and the link will be emailed to the parent(s).

  7. AR Tests Students will be taking an AR Test as well as writing a Book Report for each of the 3 books for each quarter. There is a project due at the end of each quarter using one of the books read that quarter. Whichever book is used, thatAR test will count towards the reading grade.

  8. There will be class assigned reading for which the AR test taken will count, but more information will be given about that when the books are assigned and given to the students. Such assigned books will be provided for each student.

  9. Other Book Report Notes I do not maintain a full literature reading classroom library. Even if the school library is not open right away, it will be the responsibility of each student to bring a book from home or the public library as soon as school starts.

  10. After the requirements for 3 books have been completed, students must still have an AR book which they are reading, but it may be any level and no Book Reports or AR Tests are required.

  11. Students are not allowed to borrow books from other students without the written permission of the reading child's parent(s).

  12. Parents should have the opportunity to know about and approve of the books their child is reading.

  13. Electronic books are not allowed at school at this time. Since the current AR book is to be brought to school each day, electronic readers may not be used for the AR Book Report book. Students may keep one AR book at school to read and use an e-reader for reading an AR book at home. Change!!!

  14. Reading Log and Cookie Club

  15. Students are required to complete 100 minutes of literature reading per week, and to record their reading in a Reading Log which I will provide and which is available on our classroom webpage. "Literature reading" in my class will be defined as a chapter story book – fiction or non-fiction is fine, but it must be a story.

  16. This amounts to 20 minutes of reading, 5 days per week and is an ideal time slot to read the current AR book for class. Every Monday a parent signature is due in the Reading Log along with the completed information in the reading log for that week.

  17. A grade for weekly minutes completed will be entered in the grade book each week. This Reading Log grade counts heavily towards the reading literature grade on the report card.

  18. Cookie Club Cookie Club is a special cookie celebration held once per quarter at lunch time for all students who have read twice as many minutes as required for the previous quarter. So – that means 200 minutes per week average by the end of the quarter.

  19. Required Parent Signatures “PS” ~ on Book Reports ~ due Monday on the Reading Log ~ each night on the daily Plan Book page ~ on Thursday Behavior & Effort Report page from the Th Folder – due on Monday ~ any detention notices or other slips with “PS”
