  1. BIOTIC FEEDBACK: PRIORITY AND SUPREMACY IN NATURE, SCIENCE, SOCIETY Hector Sabelli Chicago Center for Creative Development

  2. BIOS: AN EXPANSIVE PATTERN GENERATED CAUSALLY AND CHARACTERIZED BY CREATIVE AND CHAOTIC FEATURES. Features of bios absent in chaotic attractors: Novelty, diversification, non-random complexity. Asymmetric statistical distribution. Lower entropy. Global sensitivity to initial conditions. Irreversibility and contiguity. BIOS IS CREATED BY BIPOLAR FEEDBACK

  3. Biotic feedback1. Bipolar (positive and negative): produces BIOS2. Hierarchical and bi-directional: priority (weak to strong, simple to complex) and supremacy (strong to weak, complex to simple) 3. Action (energy * time), Information and Matter

  4. THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF A PRIORITY / SUPREMACY RELATION NOT DEPENDENT ON COMPLEXITY

  5. Bipolar feedback: positive and negative • The interaction of opposites (bipolar feedback) generates diversification, novelty, non-random causation and non-random complexity. • Unipolar feedback (logistic equation) produces only chaos.

  6. Supremacy: rider, brain (information) Opposites Priority: horse, heart (energy)

  7. Prototypic biotic feedback

  8. Heartbeats are the prototype of bios. Turbulence is the prototype of chaos. Heartbeat intervals Time Process equation At+1 = At +g * sin(At) Bipolar feedback generates chaos (g < 4.630..) and bios (g > 4.630..) Time Time

  9. Bipolar feedback: positive and negativemodeled by trigonometric function produces life-like bios Log scale

  10. Mutual, bipolar and hierarchical feedback: The generation of organic forms by the interaction of two process equations. X axis: Xt+1 = Xt + 0.1*Yt*sin(Yt). Y axis: Yt+1 = Yt + 0.01*Xt*cos(Xt) Each larger pattern contains and repeats at a larger scale the previous ones (fractality).

  11. Feedback processes involve action (energy * time),information, and matter

  12. Hierarchical feedback: Energetic-informatic loops as typical of priority and supremacy

  13. Lynx Beavers Muskrat COMPARE TO Lotka-Volterra Chaos Bios

  14. Lynx BeaversMuskrat COMPARE TO Complexes: Bios Periodic:Lotka-Volterra Uniform(random or chaos)

  15. EMBEDDING PLOTS Uniform: Random Time series Shuffled series Periodic: Lotka-Volterra Time series

  16. EMBEDDING PLOTS Chaos Recurrent Novel Random-like Non-random complexity Causal Bios

  17. Lynx Beavers Muskrat

  18. Biotic pattern in a multi-agent simulation of a prey-predator hierarchy with 3 levels

  19. Indians Buffalos Grass

  20. Cowboys killed too fast too many buffaloes leading to their almost complete extinction Buffalos become extinct (in simulation, Cowboys hunted 50% more than Indians)

  21. Why could not the cowboys be as intelligent as the Native Americans and allow the buffaloes to survive? Cowboys like Buffalo Bill were supplying meat to the Army that was taking the land by killing its centuries old inhabitants. ECOLOGICAL DESTRUCTION IS INTIMATELY CONNECTED WITH SOCIAL CONFLICT

  22. Biotic feedback in Economics Supply satisfies demand but also promotes demand (Say) Demand consumes supply but also promotes supply (Keynes) Economic time series display biotic patterns

  23. SOCIAL BIPOLAR HIERARCHIES • AGE: 40 y.o. adults dominate society • Parent commands and serves child • Elders as discriminated class • 2. SEX: • Female Priority and Male Supremacy • 3. CLASS • 4. RACE • 5. NATIONS

  24. FOUR CONCEPTS OF CAUSATION • UPWARD • DOWNWARD • CIRCULAR • HIERARCHICAL AND DUAL: UPWARD AND DOWNWARD • FOUR CONCEPTS OF SOCIAL ORGANIZATION • UPWARD: DEMOCRACY • DOWNWARD: TOP-DOWN CORPORATIONS, CHURCH, MILITARY • CIRCULAR: CERTAIN MARRIAGES • HIERARCHICAL AND DUAL: REALITY OF ALL SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS

  25. HYPOTHESES • Biotic feedback is a fundamental generator of complexity at multiple levels of organization: • Biotic patterns in physical, biological, and social processes • All systems include hierarchies • All processes include opposites (positive and negative charge, male/female, supply/demand, sympathetic/parasympathetic) • Biotic feedback, is bipolar (both cooperation and conflict in a world with both abundance and scarcity) and is a major mechanism for biological evolution, economic development, and social change –in contrast to evolutionary and economic theories that focus on scarcity, competition and struggle. • Bios is creative (causal but not conservative) including constructive and destructive phases–in contrast to notions of development as progress, equilibrium, or decay towards disorder.

  26. SOME APPLICATIONS OF THE CONCEPT OF BIOTIC FEEDBACK Biological Priority and Psychological Supremacy: Medical, Psychiatric, and Sociological applications. Priority of the objective and supremacy of the subjective: Epistemological, Psychotherapeutic, and Political applications Ecological priority and economic supremacy: Need for governments and economic enterprises to be ecologically responsible, and hence for ecologists to be socially conscious Priority of global processes and supremacy of local processes: act globally (attend to global warming, not to save the eagles) Priority of workers and supremacy of capitalist and military classes Female priority and male supremacy in family therapy and social organization
